Thanks. Got some decap bbs on route. I think they are eating off the moss at the mo. How do I get the green water right?
Get a bucket and fill it about 2/3 full of old tank water. Add a small hand full of grass clippings and in 3 or 4 days you will have a supply of green water to feed the new fry. I usually feed them a cup of green water 3 or 4 times a day. Adjust based of the number of fry you have on hand.
The whole set-up can be found here…

BallAquaticsParticipantI usually start with green water and move up to decapsulated brine shrimp eggs & Golden Pearls Rotifer Size 5-50 Microns.
I get most of my food from…

BallAquaticsParticipantCongrats Tom!
Perhaps these are just what’s left after they had their fill

Hi FunkyFish!
Here’s a link to the set-up I described to Tom2006

Good luck with your breeding project!

BallAquaticsParticipantHey Tom, you’re very welcome!
One thing I left out, put your green water bucket outside so that it gets lots of sunshine.

I am VERY interested. I’ve fallen for these little guys, would love to get them breeding and into a nice large shoal.
Ok, here’s the first set-up I used to spawn these little beauties.
I use a 10 gallon tank with java moss covering about 1/2 of the bottom of the tank. The moss is probably 3 or 4 inches thick top to bottom.
The top of the tank had a thick covering of java/guppy grass. About 3 or 4 inch thick covering the complete surface of the water.
I use trios of breeders with 1 male & 2 females. It’s been my experience, that if you have more fish in the tank, those that are not engaged in the spawning activity are engaged in eating the eggs as fast as they are produced.
In 2 weeks or less you should start seeing fry at the surface. I use a plastic container to collect the fry, it’s a single serving old yogurt cup. They are very fragile and don’t deal well with being netted at this young age. With a little practice, you can get 10 or 12 fry in the plastic cup and then transfer them to a “grow out” tank.
The fry are tiny! Get a bucket and fill it about 2/3 full of old tank water. Add a small hand full of grass clippings and in 3 or 4 days you will have a supply of green water to feed the new fry. Be sure to start this before you have fry! I usually give them 3 or 4 cups of green water per day. In about a week they can start eating golden pearls or powdered flake foods along with the green water.
Good luck with your breeding project & have fun!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantJava moss usually sinks and they will lay the eggs there.
The java grass / guppy grass / etc /, floats and the fry can hide in it to keep from being eaten.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantBallAquaticsParticipantI’ve got 3 groups that spawn regularly. They are notorious for eating the eggs/fry.
If you’re interested I can elaborate on how I set them up.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Tom, welcome to the forum.
It’s pretty much dead… a few posts dribble in from time to time, but dead for the most part.
I guess most of the people that were crazy over these fantastic little danios have lost interest.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Milo, welcome to the forum!
When the larger fry get big enough that they would eat the tiny fry, why don’t you put the larger ones back in with the adults.
I’ve kept new-born fry in the same tank with half grown fry without any problems.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi Kim – Welcome to the forum!
I “grow-out” my fry in their own 10 gallon tanks. I like to keep a good portion of moss in each tank for the micro-fauna that grow there. Each tank also has an air driven sponge filter. I typically feed them “golden pearls” from Kensfish.com, it’s under specialty food. Start out with the very fine dust and move up in size as your fish grow. I also feed decapsulated brine shrimp eggs.
Good luck with your CPD!

BallAquaticsParticipantWelcome to the forum georgarask!
You’re right, they are amazing little fish. Some of my favorites.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi Don,
They are probably spawning on a regular basis, they are just eating the eggs or fry before you notice.
You might try adding some floating plants like java grass, (guppy grass), for the fry to hide in. The more cover the better with these guys.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi satoshi!
I would agree with tedr108. Zebras and pearls are much too quick and aggressive to play well with CPD’s.
I have housed them with Emerald Dwarf Danio (Danio erythromicron) and Chopra Danio (Danio choprae) with good success.
