Do you know if those pictures were taken at the area where the Danios are/were found?
Yes, in the yearly part of 2007, Mr. Tin Win visited the original area near Hopong where they were first found. While on their trip they also found several other near by ponds that contain the CPD’s. In Mr. Tin Win’s words, “We have another place. The pictures indicate the other ponds where we can get Pearl Danio from Heaven”.
It was very gracious of Mr. Tin Win to allow me to post his photo’s and trip info on the site.
The home page of this site features a short article about the home of the CPD. If we can determine the names of these plants, I could expand the article to include biotope info as well.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi isaisbreetai, welcome to the forum!
Great info you have there. I have some photos taken by Mr. U Tinwin of the Hein aquarium when he visited one of the original sites where the CPD’s were found.
Are you familiar enough with the plants to identify them from the photos? It would be fantastic if you could.

without even looking – yes. If you have male and female guppys in a tank the females will be constantly pregnat.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantWithout seeing photos of your fish I’d tend to agree.
Here’s one of Glenn’s fantastic photos. Note the female at 2:00, her pelvic & anal fins are almost clear when compared to the male in the photos center. Also note that from this angle she doesn’t have a prominent gravid spot showing.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI’ve got males that don’t have a red belly. I also have some males where the fins are more of an orange/yellow color.
Once your fish mature, if they are happy & healthy, all the females will be fuller figured than the males. It is often very hard to sex young fish.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi Pir, welcome to the forum!
They can start spawning at around 5/8″ long, (12 weeks old).
For me the easiest way to sex them is the gravid spot on the females. Also, after you’ve looked at enough of them, the basic body shape will let you know if they are M/F. The girls are fuller while the boys stay very thin and streamlined.
Here’s photos of both sexes…

BallAquaticsParticipantAnubias & Java fern can both be tied to rocks, wood, or some other decorative piece and prefer not to be “planted” in the substrate. They are also low light, very undemanding plants.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantYou could always put a breeder net like this in your 25ltr tank…
In your 10ltr I’d add an air powered sponge filter. If the room temperature is comfortable for you, then water temperature will be fine for the fry.
Best of luck with your fry!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI’ve never really noticed any of my smaller Danios doing this. The larger species often get into the flow of incoming water and act like they are trying to swim up stream.

….. my local fish store calls the water liquid rock
I thought that term was reserved for our water here in central Ohio.
Going back to when Mr. U Tin Win of the Hein Aquarium visited the site where they were collecting CPD’s, the water tested at a conductivity of 250 microS/cm which is typically classified as hard water.
250 microS/cm * .64 = roughly 160 ppm
160 ppm / 17.86 = 8.95 dGH
In most water hardness charts;
51 – 120 ppm = moderately hard water
120 – 256 ppm = hard water
256 – 425 ppm = very hard water
> 425 ppm = rock hard waterWater Hardness Map of the US

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Austin, welcome to the forum!
Your pH is getting up there, but I don’t believe it’s too high. When Mr. U Tin Win visited the site where CPD’s were originally discovered, he measured the water at pH of 7.3
Keep your water temperatures in the lower 70’s F and you should be fine.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi River, welcome to the forum.
Now that all the hoopla has died down, it’s just us fish keepers. Are there still people excited about the Celestial Pearl Danio? Well I list them for sale on AquaBid every now and then… so far this year, I’ve sold several hundred to dozens of hobbyist very excited to get them.
Here on the forum, you’ll find people who have been keeping CPD’s for years now along with people just getting started with them.
This site literally gets thousands of hits each month… there is so much info amassed here about CPD’s I think it leads to getting fewer posts because visitors are finding the answers to their questions.
As of 15 Nov 2010 we have had 25677 unique visitors with 1226924 hits so far this year. Are there people still excited about CPD’s – I think so!

Just spotted my first fry 2 days after removing parents!
…..6 females 2 males left in for about 7 days.Congratulations! It works almost every time.

Thanks, yeah it’s a little challenging feeding my CPD’s. They haven’t even tried to eat from the surface yet.
They may never feed from the surface…
@satoshi wrote:
Other than that I’m out of ideas. It’s impractical to regularly feed them live food, and my other fish will eat anything that doesn’t sink immediately.
Try some algae wafers or some sinking shrimp pellets.
Best of luck!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI have seen them pick at both brown & green algae, but they are not known for their algae eating… I wouldn’t count on them to work like a clean-up crew.
