Ok, so I have 8 CPD’s in my 10g, medium planted tank for 2 weeks. They’re settled in, and have colored up pretty well. I think I’m starting to see definite males and females, it’s looking like I have 6 females and 2 males. I’m pretty sure that’s a good ratio. I’m wondering how big they have to be to breed. Mine are approaching an inch, but they still seem kind of small.

PS: Is the spot-tightness a gender giveaway? By coincidence, my 2 suspected males have smaller but tighter spots. The suspected females have larger, slightly more widely spaced spots. I didn’t judge their gender off of spots though.

Hi Pir, welcome to the forum!

They can start spawning at around 5/8″ long, (12 weeks old).

For me the easiest way to sex them is the gravid spot on the females. Also, after you’ve looked at enough of them, the basic body shape will let you know if they are M/F. The girls are fuller while the boys stay very thin and streamlined.

    Here’s photos of both sexes…

My females have gravid spots, but I don’t have any with the red belly ??? Do I have all females?

I’ve got males that don’t have a red belly. I also have some males where the fins are more of an orange/yellow color.

Once your fish mature, if they are happy & healthy, all the females will be fuller figured than the males. It is often very hard to sex young fish.

They have brighter fins, but it’s similar to the ones you describe. They’re the only ones without gravid spots, so I’m guessing they’re males.

Without seeing photos of your fish I’d tend to agree.

Here’s one of Glenn’s fantastic photos. Note the female at 2:00, her pelvic & anal fins are almost clear when compared to the male in the photos center. Also note that from this angle she doesn’t have a prominent gravid spot showing.

they will normally breed very easily themselves BUT love to eat their own eggs and fry. Have a dig around the site for methods of breeding.
