What’s wrong wit the marbles?
Typically when you use marbles with the egg scattering Danios, the breeders are only in the tank over night and the following morning. With such a short stay you don’t have problems with detritus collecting between the marbles and causing the eggs to fungus. I’m very interested to see how this works out, please keep us posted.

ParticipantYou’re very welcome! I’m so glad you are having such a good time with your CPD’s and find them such interesting fish.
Sorry I missed this earlier…

ParticipantSounds like your on your way to a “self sustaining” tank there JiCi. Well done!

ParticipantHi GaMeR, welcome to the forum!
Marbles are typically used for “egg scatters” like many of the other Danios, Zebra, Leopard, etc. Since CPD’s spawn differently marbles don’t work as well.
Yes the forum has changed, thanks for noticing. It was way past time to update to a “more current” version of phpBB.

ParticipantIt could very well be filling up with eggs getting ready to spawn. Celestial Pearl Danio are egg scatters and as such don’t get pregnant like live bearing fish.
It just depends on your set-up as to what course of action to take. There are several different breeding set-ups detailed here on the forum.
Best of luck with your breeding project!

ParticipantLittle by little I have gotten away from feeding flake foods to my fish, but I would say any hi quality flake should be OK.
I keep most of my CPD’s in species tanks and they tend to hang out in the lower sections of the tank. For that reason, I prefer to feed sinking foods. Shrimp, vegetable and earth worm sticks, algae wafers and golden pearls. Breeders and fry growing out get mostly live foods.

To be honest, mine hate the egg traps.
I get almost no eggs in the traps, I’ve counted nine so far.
If I just put a clump of java moss in the corner I can usually vac out a bunch of eggs every three days.
I pick up moss slowly and keep it over the place it was, transfer it to the fry tank, vac the area where it was, an replace with a fresh clump. This has been my personally successful method, which is a bummer, because I was excited about that egg trap. Maybe it works better in a bare bottom.
Mine don’t seem to like the trap either, so I think I’m going back to just having moss and other floating plants (elodia, etc.) and swapping the plants out to a fry tank every week or so.
I certainly don’t want to hi-jack Aquagirl’s thread about her successful breeding project, but I think there is some confusion about the egg trap.
It was developed while trying to spawn Danio tinwini, a species I find much harder to coax into spawning than the CPD. It is also NOT my preferred method when spawning CPD’s.
Here’s the original egg trap article…
http://www.danionins.com/articles/diyeggtrap.htmlWhen I set-up my CPD’s for spawning, I used a modified version of Monica’s set-up detailed in her post located in this thread…
http://www.celestialpearldanio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=855Sorry for the intrusion here, but at sometime down the road, I didn’t want any future readers having mis-conceptions about using the “egg trap” for spawning CPD’s.

ParticipantThanks for the update Carmon. It’s the same here as well, none of the local stores carry them. We don’t have any LFS anymore, just the big retail outlets. The girl at Petsmart said they were not even on their list of available fish.

ParticipantThanks for the update Aquagirl. $2.96, that is a good price.

Dennis……I had a thought…..imagine that! You know the Shirakura baby food that we feed the shrimp. What do you think about trying that for the CPD babies as an additional food source?
I’ve never used it, but is sounds promising.
I’m a big fan of Golden Pearls. It comes in sizes down to 5-50 microns and is perfect for tiny Danio fry.

In the summer I put buckets of water with dead leaves outside. I harvest tons of mosquito larvae for my fish.
You’re my kind of girl AquaGirl
Carmon, I’m with you too! I feed quite a few daphnia, the tiny ones moina. I like it that I can dump in a bunch and they will swim around until eaten – no problems with fouling the water.
For worms, the biggest I feed are grindal worms. They get to be around 1/2″ long. I’ve always been afraid that I couldn’t keep white worms cool enough in the summer.
As for mosquito larvae, I’ve been trying for the past couple of months to get my Ocelot Danios to spawn… no such luck. I’m hoping mosquito larvae will be what pushes them over the edge, I just need the weather to warm up a bit more.

ParticipantI have set them up with and without gravel and really don’t notice a difference.
If I had to guess, I’d say that when the moss floats up, they can eat the eggs that fall through or are at the bottom of the moss. The eggs are not adhesive so they will fall right through the moss unless they happen to get in a tangle.
Other than that, it sounds as though you are doing everything correctly…. or at least the same way I often set-up breeders. I must say however, I don’t get consistent results with CPD’s no matter how I set them up. Sometimes you will get 50+ fry and the next time using the exact same methods you may only get 8 or 10. I think this is one reason the price of these little jewels remains fairly high.
