Yep i agree, get around 10 fish with an even mix of male and female, If you are serious about breeding them then go for whatever you can get. It is better to take a few from the wild and multiply them by 100 in captivity than not owning any at all.
Totally agree
For as long as this fish is still in decline in the wild we are still responsible for the captive breeding and spread of captive stock.
Totally agree. I feel as strongly about that even more than I feel that bettas deserve more more space to live in than a half gallon, or even worse, those tiny things they’re usually stored in the stores at people’s home… Luckily I have an impact at work. I always maintain the stance my stance that the they need at least 2 gallons, and either good water changes weekly or a filter. Happily. many people buy them for their community aquariums, or take my advice. I always bring up the fact that with more space plants and/or decorations can be added to make it more pretty. That changes a lot of minds, because people tend to like those things, even in a rather small inclosure. We see mini decorations and plastic and real plants perfect for that kinda thing.
Uh, sidetack…Oh well, this is my thread, and who’s going to moderate a moderate?
ill keep my eye open for canadian stock that can be posted…
That’d be great. They have wilds in more specialized fish stores around here, but unless I’m quite mistaken, no domestics.
Going to call around though.

ParticipantDo they have to be captive bred??
Not really, but much prefered.
I don’t think anyone here would mind you having wild caught ones if they become available, after all you are one of the moderators on the best celestial site worldwide, and are concidered an expert by many.
Yeah, not much too moderate around now is there? Nice of you to say, but I’m not too sure I’m quite an ‘expert’
I am sure you will succeed in breeding the next lot you get. Just be patient.
I’m almost sure of it, seeing as I’ll really try this time, and won’t ever give up.

ParticipantThanks for the overview Ste.
I cleaned the 10 gallon out. Took out the plants, sand, everything. The galaxies are in a galllon ice-cream pail with lots of fake plants to hide in. Took a long look at the thing today and decided the organic sludge from the plants was probably making the water gross no matter what the test results say. The water looked clear, like always, it just covers the sand.
That stuff was nasty. I almost puked when I smelt it. Cleaned the sand as best as possible, then put it in another ice cream pail and left it outside with a lid on.
I plan on putting lots of fake plants in, and a divider in for the genders. Is it alright if they can see each other, or should I get something opaque?
Should I put in companions for the fish? I was thinking the white clouds, who have seemed to help ease the galaxies before. Especially for that one male… Or is that a bad idea? I was just thinking about the fact that these are shoaling fish.
As for the 5 gallon, I’ll have to ask permission and make promises. Not sure I can pull that off. How long does it usually take for fish to get in the right mood for spawning? With good food and all.
Gotta go back to work.

ParticipantI think the big tank is too big, and the 2.5 too small. A five gallon would be the smallest I’d figure these guys would be happy in.

ParticipantLooks gorgeous.
Never got into the planted aquarium thing, I just admire other peoples’. I am growing a rather nice lawn in my ‘semi-planted’ one though.

ParticipantI’d say “tall-ose” (without biting the long o too hard — it is the micron-o) with emphasis on the first syllable, but that’s mostly a guess.
Thanx. Sounds nice, and easy to say. Like to scold the fish when it does something bad.
Ex. “Aquila! Stop eating! You’ll get constipated again!!!”
Yeah, sometimes I talk to my fish. Better than talking to one’s plants, or pet rocks…

ParticipantI just knew you’d mention that!
But truly, I was kidding. Should have added a smilie I guess…
No offense meant to you, Jimbo at all. I know you know better.

ParticipantEeh. I’ll just stick my last post in it’s own thread, rather than potentially hijacking this one. So if you want to help me out, go there. Please?

ParticipantHighy, highly unlikly… Galaxy are danios. Pretty sure danios can’t breed with tetra, and definately not catfish. They are very different critters.

ParticipantLovely…
So when are you going to start your own fish store anyway, Ste?
Oh, BTW, are they true leopard danios, or spotted zebra danios? That’s what I want to try sometime. I have two, a big female, that was full of eggs, but droppped them somewhere, and a new male (I hope, it might be that he has not fully developed his stripes).
They’re really pretty, anyway.

ParticipantI want to go serious with the trying to get my galaxies to breed. I only have 2F and 1M and limited resources at the moment. I was looking at a breeding trap, but don’t think these fish would go for it. They look awesome, but something just ain’t right for them, so the sit and wait things not working.
What do you recomend for these little guys? They’re in a planted 10 gallon with sand right now, but I can move things around, and if neccessary, attempt to try to convince my parents to use that 5 gallon I kinda promised not to use  ( Hey, that was made while trying to convince them to let me have a 22, which I got
)
Should I seperate the two genders for a while? I know there’s not many of each, but I could put them with my neons, possibly?
I’m going to get a brine shrimp hatchery, for my platy babies as well, so I’ll have those more at hand. My attempts at home-made ones have met with little success, and last time, dismal failure. Not sure the galaxies can even see the buggers, but oh well…
Help please? I’ve had enough waiting. It just ain’t working out. But what to do with these tiny fish…?

ParticipantA low dose of methyl blue, I think it is helps save eggs from fungusing.
There’s definately preventitive chemicals that can be put in for sure though.– Atlantis
