I have over the last two months raised a tankful of leopard danios, they very quickly grew to sellable size and were sold very quickly. I sold the last batch on monday and was left with two fish, i made sure i was left with a female(obviously egg filled) and a slender male, they stayed in the tank on their own. Today i went shopping and returned with a trio of emperor tetras, i acclimatised the fish in the danio tank and released them into it 20 minutes later, as i bent down to check/admire my new purchases i noticed the danios were very active!!!! i checked closer and the bare tank bottom was covered in danio eggs, while i was out the fish had decided to make the most of the peace and quiet  ……
I quickly grapped the net and scooped out the new tetras, placed them in the new tank, watched them for five minutes and then returned to the danio tank to watch the action! well what action? the female was swimming alone and the male was missing from the tank  i quickly checked the floor and found him underneath the stand, he was thrown back into the tank and keeled over onto his back, i held it upright and he finally started gulping water and moving it over his gills, after a minute or two he moved off and stayed at the top of the tank gasping, he had scratches on his side missing scales and to my amusement a peice of fluff stuck to his nose.
Amazingly ten minutes after his great escape and near suicide he was chasing his female around and ten minutes after this he was once again spawning with the female.. He continued for around an hour and was removed when they had finished.
I could not believe that male fish as well as male humans have only one thing on their mind….GET AWAY FROM THE FEMALE AT ALL COSTS

    Lovely… :D

So when are you going to start your own fish store anyway, Ste? :P

Oh, BTW, are they true leopard danios, or spotted zebra danios? That’s what I want to try sometime. I have two, a big female, that was full of eggs, but droppped them somewhere, and a new male (I hope, it might be that he has not fully developed his stripes).

    They’re really pretty, anyway.
