I think chris has pretty much covered it. If you wanted to try and generate plenty of fry, I’d get a series of tanks (I have 5 waiting) & transfer a couple males and 4 females to them & let them spawn. Then remove the adults back to the main tank (or on to the next tank. I’ve done this once with a 3 tank set up & was getting around 20-30 fry each time but it was time consuming (having to keep a close eye)
altaaffeParticipantSorry to hear there’s pressure on to get rid of a tank – time to dig those heels in !!
I had a near miss with my main tank of CPDs when a bottle of CO2 got dumped into the water following a valve failure while I was away but quick thinking by my wife saved them all. They are all about to go back into their tank so hopefully the breeding will continue. I can see them attempting in the main community tank but with that many fish around them, there’s no way that any eggs will survive let alone fry.
altaaffeParticipantYes, I’d go for the bigger tank as well. As for breeding set it up with plants & hidey holes as Atlantis said. Then keep your 6g for raising the fry as they appear. I have found that after spawning & fry starting to appear if I feed the parents well, they don’t go after the fry.
altaaffeParticipantCongratulations – good to hear.
altaaffeParticipantHi zmo,
Sorry to hear your problems. You said that you changed their food for breeding, did you change back again after the fry. I use live, frozen & flake for mine but the wild specimens tend to bulk up on the live and just nibble enough of the others to keep going. That fact that an Otto died at the same time is a concern though.
I had a CO2 regulator fail on me and dumped a whole 2kg bottle into the water stream, fortunately with a quick rescue act all fish & shrimp survived but for a single otto. Have you checked your CO2 level, pH, etc. Big swings could be affecting them as well.
altaaffeParticipantI don’t think there is any reason to feel ashamed mate. The best you can do is give them a good life and if you have the facilities to breed them, then do so. I gave away a good number of my first spawnings but am now in the position that I can make some money off them. At the same time they have one of the best tanks in the house.
As an aside, I took on some Konia whose lake was decimated by a volcano, the sole purpose of this is to breed them and keep their species alive, not quite the same as the overfishing that went on with the CPDs but I consider that I’m now doing my bit for keeping these 2 species going. I wouldn’t have thought that they would be completely decimated in the wild but we now need to do our bit to keep the industry stocked with tank bred specimens.
altaaffeParticipantNice to meet you Richard.
Mine were timid but since their move to a 50g planted they come out & watch me when I sit in front of the tank. They share the tank with Amano shrimp & Ottos although it might also have something to do with knowing they have dense cover in their very close vicinity.
As for feeding, mine go wild for live white worms. A bit smaller than bloodworm and they can take a whole one (just !!) but they are all now taking Tetrapro colour as wellaltaaffeParticipantI live in Kinloss, Moray. Not far from Elgin.

altaaffeParticipantNice little set-up.
altaaffeParticipantI’ve had success raising fry both from eggs in a grow out tank and leaving them with their parents. Those living with their parents tended to grow quicker for some reason but I also don’t know (if like livebearers) they eat the males and leave the females as all the fry were eventually placed together. Good luck though.
altaaffeParticipantYes.
I grew out a dozen juveniles in a community tank alongside copper harlequins, Zebra Danios, cardinal tetras, corys & clown loaches with no bother. They tended to stay towards the top of the tank (I have tall plants) until they had grown some bulk.
altaaffeParticipantNice to meet you, hope you get plenty of youngsters.
altaaffeParticipantI’ve got about 80 now from my original 6 and have given away a few more. I’m about to start selling youngsters off soon, I’m just a private fishkeeper but my LFS is interested in them.
altaaffeParticipantSorry, I’m in Scotland
