I’ll eventually be getting 17 CPD’s and a 6 gallon nano cube. Perhaps that is too much CPD for breed? Or should I settle for a 12 gallon nano cube? I would want to breed them.. how should I start off? thanks!!

I’d say the bigger one. More hidey room for eggs to hatch in peace without being all gobbled, and fry to be found and taken out without being gobbled too.
Bigger is almost always better with aquariums.
(And not saying that only because I work at a petstore in the fish room… )– Atlantis
June 5, 2008 at 7:20 pm #13668altaaffeParticipantYes, I’d go for the bigger tank as well. As for breeding set it up with plants & hidey holes as Atlantis said. Then keep your 6g for raising the fry as they appear. I have found that after spawning & fry starting to appear if I feed the parents well, they don’t go after the fry.

i too would go for the bigger one. 5 gallons sounds a little small for 17 cpd.
have fun and good luck breeding. dont forget to get/post ppictures.

I’m planning to get a BIGGER tank. A oceanic Bio Cube 14 Gallon. That will definitely work. . All i ask is if you guys can answer all of my questions below.
1. Will they breed randomly in whatever pH? My pH is 7.6
2. Can I choose when and not to breed them?
3. How many babies if I get many of them to breed?
4. If I have this much CPD’s, do you think the adult CPD’s that aren’t spawning will most likely eat eggs that are coming out of a pair?
5. Can I add a breeder net or lee’s 5 way breeder inside the 14g nano cube? Will it work If i trap/isolate the parents/adults in the net so the eggs/frys will be safe?
6. IS 17 CPD’S…JUST WAY TOO MUCH?
7. Have you guys successfully sell them online? If so, what price?
8. Can you actually make good money if doing this?
9. Have you guys successfully shipped with no accidents or deaths?
10. Is this…really worth it?June 6, 2008 at 7:04 pm #13676chr15_8Participant@NeonFlux wrote:

your ph should be fine
2. Can I choose when and not to breed them?
sort off. if you dont want fry you could leave them in the tank. or better way is to split the males and females. could be hard but there are ways to tell (carnt remember the best way tbh)
3. How many babies if I get many of them to breed?
if parent are in the tank i get about 5-6 out in time. but if you seperate them into a proper breeding tank then you could see 20+ if i remember properly
4. If I have this much CPD’s, do you think the adult CPD’s that aren’t spawning will most likely eat eggs that are coming out of a pair?
some eggs will get eaten. if they get into the fry stage any fry that dont hide will propably get eaten
5. Can I add a breeder net or lee’s 5 way breeder inside the 14g nano cube? Will it work If i trap/isolate the parents/adults in the net so the eggs/frys will be safe?
i put a net in my tank for about 2 weeks. i then place into a 2.5 gallon/5 gallon tank
6. IS 17 CPD’S…JUST WAY TOO MUCH?
in a 15 gallon tank i would thought they will be fine. will look nicer and fell safer in that size group aslong as the filter can hadle the waste (my cpd’s dont produce much waste though)
7. Have you guys successfully sell them online? If so, what price?
i sold about 15 fry (3 weeks old) for about £12 ( i was going away in a weeks time so need to get rid so they be looked after properly when i was away ste sold a few on ebay for a good price £10-15 for 5 i think
8. Can you actually make good money if doing this?
i wouldnt say good money but if you breed them enough im sure that would pay for food etc for both the adults and fry
9. Have you guys successfully shipped with no accidents or deaths? havent shipped before. i know a few have though)10. Is this…really worth it?
i would say soJune 7, 2008 at 3:13 am #13680NeonFluxParticipantChris, thanks so much for the replies! It makes sense now
June 7, 2008 at 9:03 pm #13682altaaffeParticipantI think chris has pretty much covered it. If you wanted to try and generate plenty of fry, I’d get a series of tanks (I have 5 waiting) & transfer a couple males and 4 females to them & let them spawn. Then remove the adults back to the main tank (or on to the next tank. I’ve done this once with a 3 tank set up & was getting around 20-30 fry each time but it was time consuming (having to keep a close eye)

Ah, thanks for the tip. I’ll be stocking flame ember tetras as well. It’ll make the tank look fantastic. So when i do intend to seriously breed them, I introduced 2 males and 4 females to a 10 gallon? Right with java moss and etc.
By the way, wanted to ask.
how do you care for the eggs, or frys?
February 23, 2010 at 7:30 pm #14289ferreterParticipantThey’ve got most common species of fish inc CPD’s that’ll give you a good indication of how many/ incompatability/ filtration/ temperature/ water perameters etc just by giving it your tank size & adding your selected fish.
It’s far from complete & most of it is common sense but it does all the legwork for you instead of working it all out yourself. -
