Thanks a lot guys/girls and chris….Only kiddin mate. Thanks
I bought 4 secondhand 18x18x12 tanks for use as growing on tanks,I got them CHEAP,CHEAP,CHEAP, the girl who was selling was local to me and advertised on ebay, she was going to uni and needed to shut down the majority of her 18 tank fishroom. iv told her to contact me if she sells anymore tanks this size. I had the tanks for a week or two but there was no point in putting them into the shed side which was uninsulated and had no flooring. So my fishroom now measures 11ft x 6ft it is completly insulated with 2inch polystyrene sheets and will have a laminate floor all the way through. The walls are painted white with a smooth waterproof masionary paint, and the tank racks are made with 2 1/2 inch planed redwood.
It will eventually contain upto 35 smallish tanks with a total water volume of 1000litres or 264 gallons…I also have two display tanks inside the house….What shed were you looking at chris?? Let me know what sort of size and your price range and ill help you scan the net see how cheap we can get one for, im lucky as i work in a builders merchant and get a good discount on building materials, plus my company have just taken over a garden center and i took full advantage and bought a big water butt for half price
It can be done fairly cheaply if you do it in bits, also try and breed some expensive fish and it should pay for itself..Mine has upto now.ste12000ParticipantCheers guys and girls.. iv had a nice afternoon with the family, this morning was spent in my work clothes as im expanding the fishroom..iv been upto my neck in polystyrene and plywood sheets. Should be worth it when its done though. Ill eventually have 35 tanks and can keep tons more species.
ste12000ParticipantThey are a gorgous fish to breed and very interesting, if you were not so far away id post some to you..
ste12000ParticipantWelcome to the gang…there are plenty of good members and lots of good useful advice, i hope you stick around..
ste12000ParticipantI think i would certainly have a chat with the manager, i bet he would not be happy at all that his staff are giving out information like this that is damaging to the aquarium hobby.
Ask to speak to the manager, tell him what happened and slip into conversation that you are mad about fish and concerned, ask for his name and make a friend. Wait until the next time you see him and ask if he is ok, be freindly and then ask for an application form and explain you want to work in a fish store…
I used to talk to the manager of my local shop as often as possible, just honest friendly chat, after six months he asked me when i wanted to start working there!! Unfortunatly the fish industry do not pay the kind of wages i am on now so i had to politely turn down the offer although it still remains my dream job..ste12000ParticipantI love it, The pool looks fantastic with all the plants, shame about the algae but as you said it helps feed the fry, you will have to be careful when removing the plants or you may remove hundreds of fry as well, trapped between the plants… Thanks for sharing.
ste12000ParticipantYes i read about your ‘dispute’ in your other thread, why not tell his boss that he is an absolute idiot and that you are looking for a new job
I didnt realise you wanted to know if she was pregnant, take it as granted that if she has been in a tank with males and water and if their are no problems with the female(headache) then she will be pregnant.
The problem with livebearers soon becomes one of tank management rather than trying to breed them.
Check the gravid spot near to her anal vent and if it is large and black and the female is nicely rounded before eating then she is pregnant.
How large are your fish??
You are in a good position now to experiment! I would wait for babies, seperate the males as soon as spotted, and let the females remain virgin, then you are in control of when/who spawns. You can then count down the days and know exactly how long your fish carry their young before dropping. I am doing a similar experiment with Endlers and am learning plenty of things first hand, i am able to pick out large virgin females and the best male. After one day the male is removed and she drops exactly 31 days later, she has currently dropped 6 broods from one mating and is pregnant again now, broods are averaging around 20-25 with a split of sexes around 50-50. My endlers are kept on the cooler bottom shelf of the fishroom with a water temp of 72-75f.Good luck…
ste12000ParticipantThanks mate.. Yes you are right about the coconut shell, i use a fragment of this or a smooth stone or wood for these fish. Microgeophagus Ramirez like many other cichlids are substrate spawners, they clean a flat surface out in the open and lay their eggs in plain view, and then protect them from intruders. They do not use mops or plants to lay their eggs into and i cannot think of any cichlid that spawns this way.
Some cichlids are secretive cave spawners others substrate spawners and some practice mouthbrooding.
I have never bred any mouthbrooders so i might draw up a list of suitable species and try and get some next year to work with.ste12000ParticipantIt sounds good, have you settled in now or is everything still up in the air?? Make sure you get them pics in when you get a chance.
ste12000ParticipantYes you have been rambling… Its ok though my wife is the same so im used to it by now…Post your pics and ill tell you what sex your platys are…
ste12000ParticipantWell done katkin, what sort of temperature is your tank at if it is unheated?? Did they spawn in the unheated tank?
ste12000ParticipantChris i have corys…boy oh boy do i have corys http://www.celestialpearldanio.com/viewtopic.php?t=511
Let me know how many you want in a month when their bigger..
ste12000ParticipantSorry i got it mixed up i thought you had already set the tank up, Make sure you post some pics when your all done. Have you used Greenline before?? I have and was very very impressed with the service and plants.
Can you explain the substrate please.. everyone on here already knows im boring lol  I used to keep plants with laterite and co2 but i am far from an expert and any advice is good advice..Cheers mate.ste12000ParticipantIv been using good old ebay to list my fish… You can check out the add on..
