So I was minding my own business, waiting for someone to halp me get two female sunset platies, when a loud salesperson ‘helping’ two people starting their aquarium went over to the zebra danios.
They were thinking about gettinf cichads (sp?). He told them to get about 10 zebras then after a week to “get rid off them” “flush them down the toliet.”
I stopped minding my own, looked in their general direction and protested with a shocked “No!…”
He proceeded to tell them that the danios ate the fins of long-finned fish.
I said “No they don’t!”
He looked at me and told me if I didn’t stop “argueing” he wouldn’t sell me any fish.
I told him “Uh sorry.” Sarcasm unmistakable. They went on. I kept waiting. Someone else helped me get two females. Of course I was very polite to her… Though I’m almost certain, looking at the “girls” now that one is actually a male. Have to have a closer looke though, they’re still in the bag, floating in the quarintine.
Maybe I was a bit out of line, interupting the dude’s sales pitch, but frankly I care about fish and he, who is supposed to be knowledgable should know there are better ways to cycle a tank than getting some cheap fish then chuking them out like garbage.
But he was definately being an ass-shit telling me he wouldn’t sell me fish if I didn’t start argueing… Which I wasn’t, since argueing is two-sided.
He’s one of those dudes that thinking bettas in bowls is OK too.
He is so blacklisted…
Luckily, there are others to help me get my fish , so if he gets the cold shoulder next time, and all tiumes after, it’s because I DO NOT forgive or forget!
End of rant.

September 22, 2007 at 5:28 am #12252celestialdudeParticipantYeah that is cold-blooded, flushing them down the toilet. It stinks that there are people like that out there. On the bright side… there are people like us, who love fish!!! And living things in general, I hope!

Ask to speak to the manager, tell him what happened and slip into conversation that you are mad about fish and concerned, ask for his name and make a friend. Wait until the next time you see him and ask if he is ok, be freindly and then ask for an application form and explain you want to work in a fish store…
I used to talk to the manager of my local shop as often as possible, just honest friendly chat, after six months he asked me when i wanted to start working there!! Unfortunatly the fish industry do not pay the kind of wages i am on now so i had to politely turn down the offer although it still remains my dream job..September 23, 2007 at 1:38 am #12282AquaseafoamParticipantI’m sure the manager would be most upset that he threatened to not sell you fish b/c of an incident like that. I’ve said something in fish stores before- one time when a little girl was getting ready to pick out a “sparkly” goldfish- it was actually covered in ich. Unfortunately the unknowing buyers will usually believe the employee over you just because they work there and “should” be knowledgeable. Other times, the buyer doesn’t want to hear that the bala shark that they really really want doesn’t belong in a 10 gallon and will get it anyway.
Sadly, I usually don’t speak up anymore, instead I just walk away when I feel my face getting red!
But bravo to you- if nothing else- take the customer aside and tell them they should do their own research in a book or the internet before picking out fish because the employees are human and don’t know everything. Plus, remind them that they are a business and if your fish die- they get to sell you more!
Not all LFS are like this thank goodness, but unfortunately good ones are less common than bad ones IME.September 23, 2007 at 3:23 am #12284atlantis_childParticipantIt wasn’t a LFS really, at least not how I consider them. It was a big chain store. The nice, family-owned place I usually go to doesn’t have these fish, and they were renovating, and don’t have their fish room open yet.
Unfortunately I didn’t see his name tag, and my mom was trying to pull me away and stop me talking.
If I go sometime soon, I”l find out his name (he works there when I tend to go, weekday evenings…) and have a chat with the manager.
On the flip side, the last I went to exchange a male platy for a female I got helped by a really nice guy that loved fish who said my return would be quarintined, not killed like I was hoping they wouldn’t do (I wouldn’t return in that case of course!) And that they did all they could to prevent fish from dieing or being killed. He was into livebeares too, and bred, and crossbred them.
Anyway, it’s nice to know the place has great fish people too.
I never phone that store and press the number for the “Fish and reptile info” though. Last time I listened to the on hold music for 15 minutes before giving up.
