katkinParticipant
I was keeping them in the net in main tank, as they got a bit bigger i removed them and put them in a seperate tank. Unfortunately that’s when I had a fault with my heater and lost 13 out of 14 babies! Not happy. For some reason I’ve not had any babies since.
Once I move I will have a spawning tank and prob keep the babies in there until they are a good size then move them to a growing out tank.
I’ve not witnessed the fry being eaten by the adults, but have heard they will.
KkatkinParticipantGood luck, let us know how you get on.
KkatkinParticipantSorry to hear you are struggling, hope the antibiotics do the job.
Good luck
KkatkinParticipantI believe putting carbon in the filter will remove any unwanted/excess medication. Just remember to remove the carbon if you need to remidicate. If it’s white spot you need to get rid of, then up the temp to 30C or as close to it as you can. this will speed up the white spot life cycle which in turn makes it easier to treat.
KkatkinParticipantIt turns out they were snail eggs, just happened to coincide with me finding fry! I now have a billion snails to get rid of!
KkatkinParticipantWow, that looks really nice! As long as you have a male and female, then yes, they should breed. However I think they would be happier if you had a few more. They seem to feel more secure in larger groups.
Good luck
KkatkinParticipantNice looking tank. What substrate have you got in there, it looks like a fine black sand?
KkatkinParticipantCan you use Epsom salt baths for internal parasites? Not something I’ve ever tried, but I’m sure I’ve read about it somewhere.
KkatkinParticipantGoing by your stats, I can’t see any reason why you are having deaths. The only thing you might want to try is cutting out the flourish for awhile and see if that’s what’s causing the deaths. It would be a shame if it is, as I was planning on doing the same when I set up my next tank(specificly for the cpd’s)
If you are finding fry, than perhaps, you’ve just been unlucky and the cpd’s have just been unwell or weak before you received them.I’m sorry that’s not really much help.
KkatkinParticipantHi Jimbo, what are your water parameters? I’ve only lost one of my original and I think that was due to stress as it didn’t shoal with the others and didn’t colour up like the others did. Within days it was dead. The only other losses were 14 fry which got fried by my faulty heater!
I don’t add any salt to the tank, and don’t know that you need to. What are you feeding them? What planting have you got? Temperature? etc….
Not sure that I’ll be able to help any, busomeone might be able to given all your stats, routines etc.
KkatkinParticipantI’m moving soon too (50+ fish in 4 different tanks) and was planning to get some polystyrene boxes, and fish bags from the lfs. although, I’ve just found out that I’ll be without my tanks for 3 days! I thought it was just going to be overnight. Yikes.
Jimbo, where did you get the sea bait bucket thing?? I think I might have to invest in one and see if I can rig up a small heater to run off the car lighter. I already have a couple of brewing buckets, thanks to my other half liking home brewed beer at christmas!
Good luck
KkatkinParticipantThe adults get freshly hatched baby brine shrimp, Hikari micro wafers, frozen daphnia, all of which I rotate from day to day.
The fry are fed on Liquifry #1 to start with, microworms and bbs. fry are fed 3-4 times a day.
KkatkinParticipantHI, I’d say leave them in the tank with the others, they will have more chance of finding food. If you can get hold of a microworm culture, my fry seem (before I lost them) to love them. bbs are easy to hatch and feed as the fry get bigger as well. Definately get some ‘liquifry’ for any future fry you have.
KkatkinParticipantLots and lots of java moss! My tank has a bit of bogwood, java moss, java fern, anubias and hair grass(which the fry seemed to like to hide in.) It’s a low light tank (approx 1wpg) as I found they kept hidden more with bright lighting. In the low light, planted tank, they seem to be a lot happier, I’ve even added a few white cloud minnows which has encouraged them to come out even more. The cpd’s bred quite happily in this tank before I added the minnows. But I now have a seperate spawning tank with just java moss and willl simply transfer a couple of pairs as and when I want fry.
Hope that helps some.
KkatkinParticipantIt’s such a shame isn’t it. I might give it a go in my new place, if we have a good summer. I might be able to keep them out for a month, but if the weather caries on the way it is at the moment, I’ve no chance! They’ve even had to close my boys school, as not only is the playground etc flooded, but the boiler broken down as well and flooded the inside!
