As far as I know, it’s just in the Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine or on-line through the digital subscription.
I was quite disappointed with the article and expressed my disappointment on the TFH forum.

my god…..
thats just beautiful
i want to do that, but w/ 3 rows of 4 tanks
what kind of lights did you set them up with? and was it just 1 6′ strip?
Thanks m. I’m using those screw-in compact fluorescent bulbs in diy fixtures. I’ve got it down to less than $3 per tank.
The racks are just 2×4 lumber with carriage bolts for fasteners. They are 70″ long so I can put 6 ten’s, (short side out), or 2 twenty longs on a shelf. Also, if they were longer I would have needed to use 2×6 lumber.

great set up VERY envious!!!
Thanks Tom. After 40+ years of keeping fish I thought it was about time to do a proper set-up.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThanks for the follow-up information. Very nice to hear that your CPD’s are doing well now.
I normally set them up for spawning using 2 males and 4 females, so you’ve got a great mix to work with.
Best of luck with your breeding project!

is that just a mesh basket attached to the walls of your tank? or is the mesh at the top of your tank holding it up?
The mesh tabs at the top hold it up.

i love your set up…are those 10 or 20 gallons, and how many do you have lined up?
Those are 10’s. I built my racks to hold 4 rows of 6 tanks.
I don’t use baskets to set-up my CPD’s any more. Monica, (11th post down), details her set-up in this thread. http://www.celestialpearldanio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=855
I use 5 gallon tanks and set them up like she talks about now.Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI’ve set them up in breeder baskets like this before….
I just put a small amount of moss or nylon yard in the basket and the eggs will fall through to where the adults can’t get them.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThanks for the update… we’re all pulling for your little gems to get better!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantWell it’s been almost 24 hours…
I’m happy to report that after spending the last 24 hours at temperatures between 87F & 88F, (my heater varies that much), the CPD’s are all doing fine.
Just a short while ago I fed them a shrimp stick and they attacked it in the usual manner.
I didn’t notice any change other than slightly quicker movement, probably do to the higher metabolism at the warmer temperatures. They stayed in the lower 1/3 of the tank as usual and did not appear to be distressed at all.
I will be very interested to hear the out come of your battle with ick.
Best of luck!

Cheers, would it be wise to lower the GH even more then?
Well when U Tin Win of the Hein Aquarium visited the site where they were collecting CPD’s, the water tested at a pH of 7.3 and the conductivity of 250 microS/cm. 250 microS/cm = roughly 160.25 ppm and your 16d = 284.8 ppm.
Now even with that, if I could spawn them in your water, I wouldn’t go to the trouble of trying to soften it further. I’d give it a go first.
I started using rain because on a good day my water comes out of the ground at PH – 8.4, GH – 25 / 445 ppm & KH – 20 / 360 ppm.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantYes, definitely proceed with caution. It seems that every time the subject comes up the general consensus is that it’s a bad practice.
My only other option would be to run the rain through an RO unit to remove any toxins. Since it’s not loaded with dissolved minerals to foul the filters and membrane, I should get good service from them.
At the present, and for the past several years, I must just be extremely lucky, (knock on wood), as fish and plants are doing extremely well with rain water. We have abundant wildlife in this area and I’m only about 2 miles from one of the best trout fishing rivers in the mid-west of the USA. The rain that falls here must still be close to what nature intended.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI’ve got some in the fish room warming up. Currently at 85F. I’m shooting for 86 – 88. I’ll let you know how they work out tomorrow night.
At 85F, they appear to be doing just fine. The 10 gallon tank contains 11 month old breeders, 2 males 4 females.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom on rain water?
That’s all I use. Yes, I’ve heard all the horrors of pollution and collecting from a building roof.
My well water is off the charts, well not really but almost. An RO unit is not an option due to the cost of constantly changing filters and membranes.
So I use rain. Started out just collecting in 5 gallon buckets. Then moved up to 32 gallon trash cans. Now I have 100 gallon stock tanks.
It’s all plumbed up… down spout fills stock tanks, stock tanks connected to 1/2 hp water pump, pump moves water indoors and through filters into tanks on top of tank rack in fish room, from there I can gravity feed water into fish tanks.
Water parameters are 6.8 – 7.2 ph, near 0 gh & kh. I don’t own a tds meter.
You should be able to soften your water very easily by adding rain water. Just a little experimentation to find the ratio for the parameters you’re after.
If you’re letting those blue barrels fill with rain you’ve already got your water… start mixing!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantSo would I… I think the key here is “heavily planted”
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI’ve kept some in the lower 80’s during the summer months as my fish room is not air conditioned, but I don’t know that I’ve ever kept any at 86F or above. The area they come from in Myanmar, has summer time temperatures around 95F. Given that they live in shallow, swamp like pools, I would assume that the water temperature must get into the mid 80’s at times.
I’m very tempted to go warm some up as this is a very intriguing question.

If you look hard enough I’m sure you could find the tubs. Just an idea but do you have hand car washes in the states? I’m sure they’d be happy to hand their detergent drums over!!
Hey that’s a great idea. I’ll have to check them out. I’ve even got a mate that runs a car wash!
