Thanks so much Glenn!

ParticipantSimply amazing photos Glenn! Beautiful tanks, filled with healthy vibrant fish.
Could I beg permission to use the Danio sp. Red Fin photos on my other sites?

…do you have experience with CPD in the heat?
Mine have always done fine with the heat. They will stop spawning when the temperatures reach the 80’s, but other than that I haven’t really noticed that they behave any different.
During our “heat wave” last summer most of my tanks were in the upper 80’s for about 6 weeks. In September when the temperatures dropped back to normal, I had fish spawning everywhere!

ParticipantThanks snail! Sadly, I lost all my Devario assamensis this past summer to some record hot weather. They are a larger species and prefer cool water to do their best.
The ID of the Orange Finned Danio (Danio kyathit – Striped morph) above is incorrect. Mine were given the correct ID by the man who wrote the book as they say, Pete Cottle early this year. http://www.danios.info/content/book.aspx
They are in fact Danio sp. Red Fin. I have only recently started to rear some fry from these beautiful fish after keeping them for over a year.

ParticipantHi plunket, welcome to the forum!
It’s simply fantastic to hear the site informed and encouraged you into spawning your fish. It is a very nice feeling when fish reward you for your care by providing offspring. After many years in the hobby, the first sighting of baby fish still brings a smile to my face… Congratulations & keep up the great work!

Are they timid when kept in a species only tank?
I’ve seen them both ways. Often a small group in a species tank is quite shy, but I’ve also had groups which were right in your face at feeding time. If you keep a large group, they are fearless.

I’ve considered putting them in one of my nano tanks but I’d hate to lose the boldness they show in the community tank.
Is there a reason you want to move them? If they are healthy and happy where they are, and you are enjoying them, leave them.
By the way, I have several tanks where my CPD’s are in a community setting… it’s just a community of various Danio species.

ParticipantHi Tom. The sign up process has been changed. It’s now much tougher for spammers to gain access to the site.
Thanks for noticing!

ParticipantHi snail, welcome to the forum!
My fish room is not air conditioned and this past summer my tank temperatures were in the mid to upper 80’s for weeks. I didn’t lose any CPD’s, but they did stop spawning.
In fact all of my Danios, around 20 different types, did OK except for the Devario assamensis, unfortunately I lost all of these.

ParticipantI use both, but I think moss works better with the “little” Danios like CPD’s.

Quick question: will they breed in a community tank (I plan to use an egg trap like you made) or should I remove them to a separate tank?
Yes, they will spawn in a community tank. Be sure your egg trap provides the best spawning site in the tank or they may be tempted to deposit the eggs else where.
It also helps to place the egg trap in an out-of-the-way place in the tank so it will not collect too much uneaten food.
Best of luck with your breeding project! Please keep us posted.

I can’t see why it would hurt them, but they can probably eat larger food. The main purpose of the liquid fry food is to supply fry that are too small to eat other things with the proper nourishment.
Best of luck with your fry!

ParticipantI don’t have an answer for your specific question, but for what it’s worth here are my observations after raising hundreds of CPD fry.
Cool, (cold) water produces babies period. If the tank temperatures get around 80F and above, spawning stops. We had a very hot summer this year, (2010), and for about 3 months… no fry. When the tank temperatures dropped back into the 70’sF in late September, all my breeders started getting busy.
I don’t heat my breeder tanks, they are kept at room temperatures. They range from lower 60’sF in the winter months, to the mid 80’sF in the summer months. That being said, it seems as though I always have more females than males. I have never actually done any kind of study, but I like to send these fish out at a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio of males to females. Most buyers are looking at breeding and that’s how I set up my breeders. I bring this up only because I always seem to come out even when the fish are all sold… so I must have 2 to 3 times as many females as males typically.
Currently my breeder tanks are running around 64F. They are producing eggs at least once and often twice weekly. The same is holding true for my Danio erythromicron.
