ParticipantI’ll try then. Last time I didn’t even get one, even when they were all prettyed up. And 3 female and 2 male in a 10 gallon full of live plants…
Could have been other factors of course. But I’ll try ste’s way, even if he does call me blond sometimes, which is rather annoying.

ParticipantI made quite the jungle for them. Hope they like it. And if they want to hide in the “grass,” well it’s right out front, so he he he…
I believe Ste has explained the male and female seperate thing. If you condition them seperately then bring a pair together in a tank with a breeding trap, and spawning mops and stuff there’s a greater chance of fry, and a better survival rate. Sounded like a
“Oh my god there’s finally a galaxy of the different gender!!!”
to me anyway.
Learned my galaxies are bred in Mynamar, or a close country, then shipped out. Good thing, I’d say. Then I’ll most likely be getting the wild’s offspring from close to home. Wonderful!

ParticipantCould be black market or have just been here a while somewhere ste…
Hoping to pick them up tomorrow. Depending on the price I might actually get 8. They were bloody expensive, and I don’t get the 20% off that comes in so useful at my store.
SERIOUSLY: Should I seperate them females and males right away?

ParticipantI bought a divider today. My make-shift ones won’t work here I think. Should I seperate the males and females to begin with?
I don’t have (or want!) any snails. Too much trouble in my books. It’s pretty easy to get though, I’ll add some water from the container holding my plants right now to the tank. That should do it.
Oh, and maybe a filter insert from one of my other tanks.

ParticipantUpdate: One of the fry has mysteriously disappeared from the fry net. The others are doing well and growing fast.
The normal girl, Amber will give birth any day now hopefully. Looks like she’s going to burst, and spends her time resting on the floating plants. See some dark behind her bulging white-ish main body now.
I’ve been keeping her swperate since she got big so the others don’t harass her.

ParticipantI have some of the moss already. Not much though. I’ve had it monthes, and it hasn’t grown much. Mostly just gathered scum and sand. With that stuff gone, and more light it may do better.
It’ll be the only living plant in the tank. I was thinking it’d be all plastic stuff. Thanx for reminding me.

ParticipantActually, now that inventory came in we have just about every plant you can name. They look awesome. I might actually convert a little to the live plant cult…
But not in breeding tanks. Too much hassle.
And I found a large chain store with Galaxys!!! And captive=breds no less!!!
Very excited.

ParticipantI think we actually might have that one at the store. We mostly have weird ones though. No java anything, no ludwiga spiralis or whatever that thing is. We do have a cool one that looks like a lilly-the-valley and have blooms like it too. One that turns rather pink too…
Does hornwort take root if you stick it in the plant soil stuff, or is it just a floating thing?
We also have another something quite like it too that has finer leaves, can’t think of the name right now.

ParticipantReally dedicated to live plants, aren’t you, Celestrial?
No, my plants are going in the community. I think they’ll look awesome there, plus there’s more space, so it’s not so cramped. Actually thinking of getting a scrubby low spreading little plant that is pretty cool as i sort of have a slate-y rugged thing going on. Will switch things around for the live plants though.
Think my fish will like the new plants.
Anyway, I’ll post before and afters…

You know me… always a big proponent for live plants and full-spectrum lighting… I think it will help a lot with the health of your fish because it’ll help stabilize your tank ecosystem. Good luck with the project…
Well they’ll get the light because my planted tank will be right next to it, but judged from my last planted tank I don’t have the right stuff to deal with live plants and trying to breed. Or plants in sand period. It just got sludge on the bottom that I couldn’t get rid of.
Haven’t decided what I’ll do with the bottom of the tank yet. Need something to hold them damn plants down. Why do they make that base thing still be able to float?

ParticipantHowever, Myanmar is said to have officially removed these guys from their positive list of what *can* be exported (which is actually a better way to do it than to have a potentially incomplete list of what can’t be exported). So the connection between buying them from stores and adding pressure to wild collecting should be broken, black markets and illegal activity aside.
That’s great! I’m surpised but pleased they’d take that action. After all, it’s a pretty poor country, probably needs all economic activity it can get.
Now’s the time to buy, huh… Before prices hit the roof!
Keep in mind you’ll have to find a way to get the adults away from the kids as soon as they spawn, especially if the eggs/fry only have plastic plants to hide in.
Yeah, every time I try a spawning I’ll remove them and check for fry and/or leave it for a few days.
I’m calling around today. Going to pick them up soon as my tank’s free, as I’ll soon be boarding a stray goldfish. It was in a university pond, but when they drained it and brought the fish in, they missed this guy. My sister’s boyfriend found him, and he’ll be staying at my place till he sets something up. For the fish that is… He has aquariums too.
Where I work they have these ‘flats’ of fake grass looking plants. Thinking of buying a few. The galaxies would probably appeciate them.
