Never mind the above… Good news in. We got a suprise batch of plants in, the usual weirdos, the glosssotigma thing included. Looks nice and green. Short too.
Didn’t get any. We also got those big apple snails in, so I snagged one of six of them before they’ll be sold out again.
And I get enough hassle bringing my “work home with me” as it is. So I have to be careful how much I buy and how often. And believe me, that’s hard, working in a fishroom and all. The staff discount helps too.
Still need plants for the ‘other’ plant tank. The one where we actually choose which ones, not just get a set number and species of…

Is the riccia common enough to get and easy enough to grow?
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantOh, and what about good floating plants? Pretty ones, not hornwort or cabomba. People just buy them for fry and goldfish food here.
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantWe actually do have java fern. Common ones we actually do have are polysperma, hornwort and cambomba. Microsorum pteropus too That’s it if I recall right.
We ‘might’ have Sagittaria subulata. If not I want to get some it. People like carpet stuff. Anything else like that?
Is Salvinia common and easy? It looks awesome!

atlantis_childParticipantSo now I gots 9 platies. 4 female, 2 of which are currently huge, especially one that is truly past due date (she looks like a little sphere with eyes, fins and a mouth  )
The new females are small. No obvious pregnancys there.
Got a new male too. Not that I need a new one, but he has a more even orange coloration, which is my preference. Nice and small too. I don’t get larger platies no matter how pretty. Defeats the point of them being ‘dwarf.’
So now I’ve got 4 females and 5 males.
With only two males that will be contributing to any offspring. Ha ha ha…
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantBut catfish don’t eat decaying plant matter right? They just eat the food bits on the bottom.
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantAnother question.
How do you keep the substrate at the bottom free of organic sludge without disturbing the plants?
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantHa ha… Took out the jungle of fake plants to clean the icky bottom only to find most of my little galaxies had got through the divider. Took out everything, cleaned as much as possible without starting over with the cycle and put some long hornwort strands with a rock on each to keep them down. Bare bottom.
They seem to like it, though don’t stay much in the plants. The little guys are all over the place, not shy at all.
Need to get more hornwort. I took that bunch from the platy tank.
Guess that means 3 of 3 of my tanks are real plant only.
That make you happy live plant cult members?
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantWell I got another female, so that’s 2 femalse for every four males.
I had looked at buying another after Summer, but there was only one I kinda considered. Came back and they still hadn’t got in new ones. Got the one that wasn’t too bad Asked when they got in fish and came back two days after that. Still no new fish. Apparently they get some but not all species every thursday.
Thanks for not telling me dude!
Anyway. I’ll wait a bit then look at getting 1 or two more females. After I call to confirm there’s more in of course… Or maybe I’ll go phone them now and ask when. Then call after that date to confirm. :x
Oh, since the 2 females are rather pregnant and on their own side of the divider I had two seperate the males. Two in the platy tank, two in the community.
They were being nasty little buggers! Chasing and fin-nipping.
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantStill no new fry… Anything I can do? Tried the peas. She took a small bite but doesn’t like them. Gone now. Assume the catfish liked ’em better. Giving her a bit of algae wafer each day plus regular live-bearer food and/or a blood worm or 2.
Would being around other fish (not platies) help in any way? She seems so lonely and depressed.
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantWell…since I last wrote on this thread Amber still hasn’t given birth. Gotten bigger though.
Fry looking like fish now, not just fry. Well you know, the big head and little tail. 2/3 the size of one of my pygmy catfish now I think.
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantThey are all so awesome, but I like this ‘un the bestest!

– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantI love that ‘Pellia!’ Very nice tank too.
Hoping you upgrade to a bigger tank for the galaxies though. Sounds rather crowded to me. Though that doesn’t seem to show in your photos.
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantThe last girl bought was really nice in coloration, but most aren’t as pretty.
Oh damn! Summer just died on me. She was being treated for fungus, and as I took her out I noticed her fins were short and ragged as well.
So that leaves me with 4 males and one pregnant female. She’s seperate, and I had to move 2 of the males to the community tank because while 3 males together was fine, 4 together just wouldn’t leave each other alone and began being nippy.
So now I really do need another female huh…
– Atlantis
atlantis_childParticipantOh, I have light, almost white aggregate. Neon orange fry would have a chance hiding! I found when I got the 3 that they swam around about two thirds down.
