ParticipantWell done!! They are prolific breeders but just as prolific eaters of their eggs and fry. Your likely just to get a few each time but they all add up.

I would guess that they had an illness already. They do tend to be thin and pale when bought from shops though

Participantfreezer is a very bad method I my opinion. Water expands when it freezes slowly and so your fish will die slowly and from a quite nasty death as all the cells freeze and expand!
The best method that I use and the quickest is just to flick the head of a small fish like a danio or tetra. Anything larger I place in a suitable bag and hit it as hard as I can on a hard surface, never had this fail, kills the fish outright.

Participanthe problem you will have is that they will find it much easier to find the fry. The larger the tank the more chance of some eggs and fry escaping the mouths of the adults. That said, if you plan to remove the adults its perfect for a hatchery
