Well done Tan, mine are about the only fish in my fishroom that have not bred!! I got eggs twice but they were not fertile
I do not know whats going on with them.hey, i thought mine were the only galaxies in the world to not have bred….patience it seems!! took mine since march!! good luck

thanks and will do!!

well done and congrats
how many have you got?
are they in there own tank/ isolated from the parents?
you need to change you sig now
the most we’ve seen at any one time is 7, but the tank is heavily planted, so there could be more. i’ve kept them with the parents as there is alot of plant cover and the adults seem to stay in 1 corner and the fry are in another, so their territories dont really cross so hope that they’ll be ok. i did have a fry tank all set up and cycled, but then packed it up since they weren’t breeding! they were 1st spotted a couple of weeks ago and now about the size of a wk old guppy fry (about a cm but with e distinct round body and quite easy to spot now in the tank!)
and yep….off to change my sig!!!! well spotted!! :wink:tanParticipant@chr15_8 wrote:
when you syphon the water do you just use abit of pipe/hosepipe?
chris
i use these bulb syphon things i got on ebay!! squeeze the bulb a few times then the vacuum creates the flow of water. works ok for a while then you have to actually continually pump it as the tank is only a few inches off the ground . same when feeding the water back in. narrow gap for access to the top of the tank too, so using a jug isnt possible.
another reason for keeping any maintenance to that tank to a minimum! i hate it as its really awkward to get to! cant do without it though! i still love my tanks..awkward and all! i guess minimal disturbance should be a plus….not interupting any copulation!!tanParticipantno, i dont do anything with the gravel. just syphon a bucket of water off the top every week and put some fresh water in to keep the nitrates as low as poss  . i rinse out the filter in the used tank water as it clogs up and doesnt work properly every week. if the filter is still working fine i dont touch it.
tanParticipantaah! my guppy fry always go to the surface first then after a few hours if i havent spotted them and scooped them out they dive down to the plants to hide at which point i cant net them so they have to fend for themselves…which they usually manage! if they’re fast enough to dodge my net they’re fast enough to dodge the big hungry fish!
i have some floating plants in the galaxy tank and they’re about 1-3 inches from the top. so maybe they’ll use that. not too concerned about the fry surviving in there as the galaxies are always at the bottom and dont even come to the middle let alone the top, so i’m confident any fry will survive from being gobbled so long as they get to the upper part of the tank and dont get gobbled on the way there. oh when will it be my turn! everyone else finds this breeding lark so easy!
if you’ve had them breed once i’m sure you’ll get more and you’ll be better prepared for next time!tanParticipant@atlantis_child wrote:
Yeh, waiting sucks. Mine have been all colorful and dancing around and chasing each other for weeks, but still no fry. All I can do now is peer around the tank hopefully every time I get a chance.
yep! thats me!! keeping to the same routine, and hopefully searching the tank a few times a day whenever i get a minute and every slight movement i see in the plants i examine only to be disappointed to discover its just a surviving daphnia  ! good luck. lets hope we join the gang of breeders soon eh!
tanParticipant@chr15_8 wrote:
i think you need to just wait tbh
as i said im sure you will get some soon i felt exactly like you wheni had to wait about 3 months for mine!thanks! my set up is much the same as yours then really! looks like a 3 month wait for mine too! i am so impatient though! just 1 fry a day would make me ecstatic!!!
tanParticipant[quote=”katkin”
can only find two of the fry! I’ll go and get a better breeding net tomorrow for the remaining fry.[/quote]
oh no! hope you find them or have some more! if you need to sell any fry i’m here!! hesistant to get any more though until i know i can breed them . i will not give up though!tanParticipantmy idea is when i get fry to swap them with someone on here or my lfs(local fish store) to keep a good geneitc mix but not to reduce my population. surely the more i have the more fry i’ll get. hopefully one day i’ll get the fry i long for!!
tanParticipantcongrats!! i cant blame my water then cos yours is worse than mine for hardness! what temp are you at and do you have any airation in your tank? i am soooooooo jealous  tan
tanParticipantcongratulations…….but omg! am i the only one who cant get these fish to breed? where am i going wrong. i’ve lowered the temp even more. it was 25 when i got them, then read on here 24 is better, we’re now down to 23C. i decided that since they are from a lake that they may not like the bubbly filter and airstone, so i’ve turned the airstone off. they have java moss and loads of plants and not 1 single fry  any ideas what i else i need to do? btw, ammonia and nitrite are zero and nitrate 5-10. 10 galaxies in a 28 gal so way understocked hence low nitrate. they should be at it like rabbits!!
tanParticipantas they were only discovered last yr we wont know until those that have been in captivity from birth die off. then they’ll be able to work out an average. perhaps see how long related species live for and draw an average from those? – that’s the closest estimate you’ll get!
tanParticipantat paws for thought in leeds/ where i got mine they were £1.99 each or 5 for £9 in march, now they are £2.50 each, or 5 for £11. maidenhead aq. are robbers!!! all the more incentive for us lot to breed them. it seems as predicted that demand is higher than supply as they should be relying on captive bred sources now and leaving the lake alone. good luck everyone!
