Thats looking fantastic. I cant wait to see it with fish!!! A question for aquaholic85 are shell dwellers Neolamprologus multifasciatus ect suitable for mixing with Mbuna??
Neolamprologus are the closest to south American dwarf cichlids that lake Tanganyika has.ste12000Participant@atlantis_child wrote:
Uh, sidetack…Oh well, this is my thread, and who’s going to moderate a moderate?
I like that comment
ste12000ParticipantYep i agree, get around 10 fish with an even mix of male and female, If you are serious about breeding them then go for whatever you can get. It is better to take a few from the wild and multiply them by 100 in captivity than not owning any at all.
The only time i dont agree with wild caught fish is when they are bought purely for decoration and the owner has no intention of breeding them.
For as long as this fish is still in decline in the wild we are still responsible for the captive breeding and spread of captive stock. If i was closer i would send you some, ill keep my eye open for canadian stock that can be posted…ste12000ParticipantI dont know how i missed this post but that fish is stunning, how large is it? i beleive they reach around 4 inches, is that right?? A couple of them would look fantastic in my livingroom tank.
ste12000ParticipantI agree, just make sure you keep on top of the water changes in such a small tank. Luckily a couple of litres a day is possible in a small tank and the fish will thrive, they are an ideal size for nano tanks. Maintainence should take no longer that 10 minutes daily.. Goodluck.

I don’t think anyone here would mind you having wild caught ones if they become available, after all you are one of the moderators on the best celestial site worldwide, and are concidered an expert by many.
I am sure you will succeed in breeding the next lot you get. Just be patient.ste12000Participantviby72 this is a pic of the spawning tank.
ste12000ParticipantDont know how the Dollar compares to the british pound but i paid £20 for five wild fish in the spring, just as it came out that they were overfished in the wild. These turned out to be all males, i sourced some females from Pete Liptrot and Paul Dixon and paid £18 for five females. I have since lost a few due to them jumping from my uncovered tank
Luckily i am now breeding them and can pass them onto other UK breeders.ste12000ParticipantIts a good job im sad and took a load of pics to share with you guys, my missus thinks im crazy, i fill the memory card within an hour and am running in and out loading them onto here.
I used about 10 small mops, the male had got under the mesh so i ripped it out and quickly grabbed the nearest thing to me, a large handful of mops that were lying unused next to the tanks. I just wanted plenty of cover for the fish to feel secure in. Mops are better than moss in a bare tank because they do not leave a load of bits when removed from the tank. I could not see the back of the tank and the fish obviously felt fine in there.
Todays spawn has been the biggest yet, i left them alone for 2 hours after i first saw the eggs, the female was very thin and hiding from the male. I removed the parents after this and removed the mops, the eggs simply fall out and are not adesive. I have counted at least 60-70 eggs in the tank and there is most probably a few more.
Im well chuffed and think this is quite a result. The female used was the largest of my four and had a very rounded stomach. I think you should be ok with or without the mesh as long as you are around to take out the fish when they finish. if you want to pop round to take a look first hand im in all day tomorrow(sunday)BREEDING MALE
BREEDING FEMALES, ONLY ONE WAS USED.
TOP ROW, CELESTIAL FRY IN RIGHT HAND SIDE, SECOND FROM RIGHT CONTAINS TODAYS EGGS.

SOME OF THE EGG’S
ste12000ParticipantIs it inert chris, you know where it does not contain substances that will alter water chemistry??
ste12000ParticipantI put a pair in last night, within 10 minutes the male was underneath the mesh!!!! aaaarrrrrrggggg. I took it out in the end and put in a very large amount of mops, iv just checked on them and counted at least 10 eggs on the bottom, ill keep my eye on them and leave them in until they are finished.
ste12000ParticipantRight atlantis this is my wish list, 1000 wild discus, 200,000 cardinals, 50 zebra plecs, all the dwarf cichlids and a ton of bogwood, java moss and java fern..
Oh yeah and this tank to put it in. http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Arapaiman_Monster_Tank_MFK_version.html:lol:
ste12000ParticipantI know exactly how you feel Atlantis  I also killed some of mine last weekend due to my own stupidity…I whacked the heater right up to quickly raise the temperature in a breeding tank, forgot about it, came home to find my poor glowlight danios dead, mouths wide open and the temp at 110f
Please dont give up on the celestials….search, hunt, beg and borrow to get some more, you deserve them and they deserve you. ste12000ParticipantStunning!!!! truly stunning, the quality is fantastic. Same as the last question..whats the substrate?? I bought what was labeled as black river sand, it is more like gray small gravel. Its ok just not the black like yours(what i wanted)
