Congratulations! As for feeding them, how about microworms? At least after the first week or so. How many have you got?
KkatkinParticipantNot a bad idea chr15-8. The other option would be to put all the adult cpd’s in the same tank and use the other 15 g for the fry. Do you think 15 uk G would be okay for 17 adults, seeing as there won’t be any other fish in there?
KkatkinParticipantYippee! Found all 4 of the original fry and I think I’ve just spotted another, but can’t catch the little devil! What a relief. How long will I be able to keep them in the breeder net for before they get too big? I know I could just release them back into the tank, but this way I can keep an eye on their progress and numbers. Once I’ve grown 10 or so out to adult hood, I’ll let them get on with it and won’t bother to move to breeding nets.
zzyzx: how big are they at 2 months?
KkatkinParticipantGlenn, I am so jealous! Those pics put my tanks to shame.
I have a trigon 190 community tank, which has just been thrown into chaos as my neighbour dumped a red tailed black shark on me (it was a case of take it or he’d flush it!)
Also home to;
6 dwarf gouramis,
4 albino cories
2 ottos (soon to add more)
3 zipper loach
1 dwarf chain loach
3 guppies2x15G planted tanks housing my cpd’s and 2 ottos. One has loads of java moss, fern, anubias with 3 male and 4 female’s, these are the ones producing babies so far.
The other tank has 2 clown killies and 11 cpd’s, I don’t know the ratio of m/fWhen I get a stand, all the cpd’s will be moving into their new home which is a 4 foot tank.
I am considering putting them all in the java tank for now and using the other 15G for fry, but as I only seem to have one baby at the moment, it might be a bit lost in there!
KkatkinParticipantWell, I got the net breeder trap and an extra fine net to catch the babies in, unfortunately I’m down to one lonely little baby. Can’t find the others anywhere and I’m begining to think they may have got sucked into the filter. BUt at least I know they will breed for me, so everythings crossed for more fry.
Tan, be patient! oh, and don’t look in the plants for the fry as I spotted mine at the surface about 1/4 – 1/2 inch below the surface, and they’re tricky little buggers to see!
Good luck.

congrats!! i cant blame my water then cos yours is worse than mine for hardness! what temp are you at and do you have any airation in your tank? i am soooooooo jealous  tan
There’s no airation in the tank but the fluval 2+ sends quite a strong stream of current diagonally across the tank. The temp is 24C. Unfortunately I’ve been away for a couple of days and can only find two of the fry! I’ll go and get a better breeding net tomorrow for the remaining fry.

they so not lay them in clusters.. those would be snail eggs.. they are egg scatterers and the eggs will be individial in amongst the tank. most likely they will fall to the bottom as they are not sticky as far as I have found
well, the smallest ‘cluster’ of eggs has dissapeared and I’ve found 4 fry swimming about! I’m keeping an eye on the other ‘clusters’ and have managed to scoop some out and put them in a breeding box so I can see just what they are!
I’m just pleased I’ve finally got some fry.
KkatkinParticipantOkay, I think I may have eggs. There’s several clusters around the tank, some around stems, under leaves and even on the front glass. Now I suspect that some of these may be snail eggs as they are not completely clear (slightly opaque) But others are completely clear clusters, no colour, in fact they look like tiny groups of water droplets and very hard to focus on.
Does anyone know how long they take to hatch?
Cheers and fingers crossed I may have babies in the next few days.
KkatkinParticipantWhat fantastic photos! That tank looks great, what plants have you got in there?

Katkin – try the Practical Fishkeeping site. I think somewhere they have a list of pH readings submitted by their readers around the UK.
brilliant,thank you, I’ll go have a look.
KkatkinParticipantCongratulations!!! That’s brilliant, I’m still waiting, but hopeful, they certainly seem keen, just haven’t quite got round to it yet!
KkatkinParticipantYes that is a flattened moss ball! It’s no longer in that tank I’ve used it to cover part of a log in a larger tank! The tank actually looks a lot diffenerent now. Alot more tall plants throughout and java moss at one end wedged between some of the taller plants. I’ll try and get a more recent pic up when I get the chance.
My next dilemma is moving! Sometime in August I’ve got to shift my 4 tanks from North Yorkshire to Arborfield (Berkshire) Can’t say I’m looking forward to it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
And if there’s anyone living around Reading area who would be willing to give me there water stats, that would be great. I’m hoping it’s not as hard as it is here, ph of 8+
KkatkinParticipantGood video. Mine won’t come to the surfice to eat, they wait until bits sink!

Hi Katkin,

I had a look at that, what is the website? There are three pages in that post are all three displayed? Do you know if these plants are widely available or should I just try for something similar?
Cheers
KkatkinParticipantI recently returned to Maidenhead aquatics, where I got my danios from (for free) and they have more than doubled the price! They’ve gone from £10 for 4 to £25 for 4! & they didn’t have many left either. Glad I got them when I did or they may not have been so generous.
