Here’s the irony… in my tank I also have Hygrophila polysperma… but it’s not doing well because it’s being “taken over” by the string algae. It’s a small tank and the lighting is quite strong. Will try the moss ball solution after I move to a bigger tank.
mmmmm. do you have any substrate at all?
or use any ferts?chris

What exactly is in the liquifry stuff that they eat? And does it go everywhere in the tank, or do the fry have to come to it, or what? : How does it work?
its made by interpet over hear (in england)
not sure if you can get it anywere else it might be called something else
thanks zzyzx how do you use it like atlantis_child asked?
chris
chr15_8Participantthe main reason for algea is not enough plant levels
if you was to cover half your tank with Hygrophila polysperma within 3 weeks i would of thought you would have limited algea.
however if it was for a breeding tank and you wont to tank the fry out it could cause a few problems
if you want to leave the fry in it would help to increase hiding spaces

At some point, it would be very interesting if we could arrange an experiment to see if leaving the fry in the tank with the parents results in lower fry survival rates than moving them out.
Of course, someone could come on here and say that they’ve actually -observed- the adults eating fry and then I’d say we all need to get fry tanks.
well i carnt see anymore in the parent tank today (i did yesturday) however there’s so much java moss it would be hard to tell untill another 5 weeks when they get bigger
would love to do the test but its down to cost, time

Neatoes, thanks for the tip Chris, I’ll try that. Stories are good, keep them coming!
I will be upgrading to a bigger tank hopefully soon…
im not sure if it works or not it might of just be a coinsedance but thought i’d share
chris
chr15_8Participanti have thread algea in my breeding tank and love it at the moment however its not pretty.
if its for your breeding tank (if your trying to breed them that is) i wouldnt put any ‘algea eating’ fish in there as im sure they will eat the eggs aswell when sifting though the plants etc
but thats not answerd your question
in my planted tank i had a big algea bloom of thread/string (mainly by the filter outlet) a few days ago i added moss balls/ Marimo balls and this morning i noticed that all my thread algea has started to die off.
not sure if it was the moss balls or not but i know moss balls are actually a type of algea so it might of starved the thread/string algea of netriants. might be worth having a little loook into it

sorry for the storychr15_8Participant@atlantis_child wrote:
Yes, but I got the feeling that stores won’t buy them till they got their adult coloration anyway.
I should probably do a bunch of research on danio genetics and stuff. I just don’t want to have to buy more wild caught galaxies.
totaly agree with you on that one but if you can find someone local you could swap fish (at say around 15 weeks old when they can be sexed)
i also agree on the fact stores probably wont buy them of you untill get the adult colours though
chris
chr15_8Participantgreat video
very interesting

Yah! Babies! Cograds.
How big is your breeding tank, and how many males, females, by the way?tank is a about 14 gallons i have around 5 males and 7 females (i think)
hard to count in a tank with 1/4 coverd in java moss and 3 walls coverd in hair algea (works out well for the eggs i would guess and also give the fry a place to hide untill i come along)
chris
also one of my babies died just before putting it into the fry tank

Does anybody know if it’s bad to breed the parents with their offspring?
I thought it was ok for fish. At least, for a few generations.Another thought I had. I’m not just going to keep just any of the offspring, I’m going to keep some of the prettier ones for future breeding. That makes sense, right? Afterall, most people that buy the fish probably won’t buy them to breed them.
i heard if you breed offspring together they are weaker so i would assume its the same with parent/offsring breeding which is why i would leave the fry in my planted tank as they would probably get dissposed of quite quickly
i know where your coming from in terms of selecting fry for future breeding but from pictures that ive seen of young fry you would have to wait t least 10 weeks to be able to see the colouring on them and i would think longer to sex them
chris
chr15_8Participantwell they did breed and i have found 4 (i know theres more as i can see them and when i take the hood off there gone)
but it seems a bit of a time gap between the fry and chasing maybe its a different bunch
chris
chr15_8Participantjust a few questions
what do you feed them and how long have you had them?im sure they would come out when they are hungry or they will come out at night when the lights go off
just remeber they havent really been in contact with people except the shop you bought them so it will take a while to get use to things
hope this sort off helps
chris
chr15_8Participantat my local maidenhead they are the same price and they havent sold any more by the looks of it
chris
chr15_8Participant1st
i will swap them for other baby Celestial Pearl Danio (hopefully with a member on here) for breeding purpose2nd add them (about 20-30) into my 45 gallon planted as a general fish if they bread i would leave the baybs in there as it would be a nightmare to try and catch them
chris
chr15_8Participant@celestialdude wrote:
If we assume it’s the same lifespan as for other danios, then I’d say we’re looking at a range of 2-5 years, depending on tank conditions.
You can get an idea from Googling this search phrase:
danio OR danios OR danionin lifespan OR “life span”
I’m not sure if anyone has had their Celestial Pearl Danios die of “old age” yet considering it’s such a newly discovered fish.
depends
i imagine whatever they catch they sell
so i might be unlucky and have an old fish but the others could be young (under 4 months) etc -
