If left to just indiscriminately breed among themselves you will eventually have problems. Here’s a link to a fantastic PDF outlining some captive breeding guidelines.

Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI have sponge filters in all my 5.5 gallon breeder set-ups. Even though I do massive daily water changes with the fry, I still feel better with a filter in the tank.

I cant seem to find golden pearls around there.
They are not available locally here either… I get mine from Kens Fish ==> http://www.kensfish.com/moreinfo/golden-pearls-5-50-microns.html
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantSame as MChambers… green water and 5-50 micron Golden Pearls to start…. around 10 days they will take microworms and at about 14 days they should be big enough to eat bbs.
Congratulations on your success!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantNot sure what the coolest would be, but mine are always still going strong at 20 (68F)!

What temperature is your water at room tempter?
This time of the year they run around 20 (68F) – 22 (72F). My CPD’s stop spawning when the temps get up around 26 (78F).
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantWell when U Tin Win of the Hein Aquarium visited the site where they were collecting CPD’s, the water tested at a pH of 7.3 and the conductivity of 250 microS/cm. 250 microS/cm = roughly 160.25 ppm, fairly soft water.
That said, I’ve kept them under a wide range of water parameters and temperatures with great success. Mine seem to be the happiest in cooler water, room temperature un-heated tanks, and with the pH close to neutral, (6.8-7.2 pH).

For you 20G fry tank, what percentage and how often do you do a water change?
70% to 80% daily. When you are growing out fry, super quality water is every bit as important as hi quality food.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI can’t really advise on the fluval chi as I have no experience with them. I use air powered sponge filters in all my fry tanks.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThat’s a loaded question… it kind of depends on how much aquarium maintenance you want to do. When I’m growing out fry, I keep 65 in 20 gallon long tanks, but they get frequent large water changes.
Without a lot of work, you could probably keep two dozen in your 12 gallon.

How long do you leave your 3-4f/1M in the breeding tank for?
I normally leave them 5 to 7 days. If I don’t see any fry within about 10 days after removing the adults, I’ll try again.

BallAquaticsParticipant@shift wrote:
Is there any easy way to tell when its the right time for breeding?
You can generally tell when the females are in breeding condition as they will be rather full bodied with eggs. They can start spawning at around 10 to 12 weeks old.

From reading the forums it sounds like 2f/1m is a good ration.
I usually go with 3 or 4 females and a single male, but trios will work well too. Too many and the ones not spawning will be busy eating all the eggs.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi shift, welcome to the forum! Sounds like a good plan to me. I’ve spawned lots of CPD’s in 5.5 gallon tanks with just a clump of moss. I would put something over the intake on the filter… CPD fry are tiny!!!
Best of luck with your project!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI can’t say that I’ve ever noticed any of mine acting that way. Mine normally remain in the bottom area of the tank… sorry I can’t be more helpful.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThat’s a very lovely tank Marius, thank you for sharing your video with us. Congratulations on your success!
