Hi Axelrodi202!
A trio would work great, one male & two female.
You’ll need some dense floating plants if you want to raise some fry in with the parents.

BallAquaticsParticipantI was re-reading this today and thought you might be interested. Down on page 9 it goes into how much alike these two fish are.
It even suggests that Microrasbora erythromicrom be renamed Celestichthys erythromicrom.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi cdirus!
Their breeding habits are so similar to CPD’s that it wouldn’t surprise me to see them cross breed.
I think your tank still has plenty of room to add the emeralds.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Lissa,
I usually grow out my cpd fry in tanks with shrimp. I have never seen cpd attack grown shrimp, but I have seen cpd hunt down and eat baby shrimp.
When the cpd are young they simply can’t swallow baby shrimp, but once they mature watch out.

Should the Java moss be in a big clump, or spread out in a carpet?
And, how in the world do I tell when a female is ready to spawn?
Your tank setup sounds fine.
You want the moss to be arranged so they can burrow into it. I usually just keep mine in a very large ball, about 1/4 of the tank.
You’ll notice your girls being chubby. It’s kind of hard to explain, but they will look well rounded when compared to the males.
I never had much luck raising any fry until I put a trio into a completely overgrown 10 gallon tank. They are easy fish to get to spawn, but they will eat the eggs and the fry almost as quick as they produce them.
I just started a tank with guppy grass floating above java moss that takes up one half of the tank. I’m hoping the fry will stay on the planted side until I can remove them.
Also, I always move the fry into a grow-out tank that is full of java moss. Simply catch them in a small cup, I use an empty yogurt cup. They are very fragile and don’t take well to netting.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your breeding project!

BallAquaticsParticipantMy first group of cpd were wild caught and very timid.
But my tank raised cpd are as bold as brass!

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Luke, welcome to the forum!
I’ve got a ten gallon that has a trio of cpd along with about a dozen yellow and tiger shrimp. I’ve had a steady stream of fry from the cpd’s.
I’ve always had more problems with the cpd’s eating the eggs or fry rather than the shrimp.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi DarrylR!
You might want to get some sponge pre-filters for the intakes on those hob filters. They will keep the fry from getting sucked into the filter.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantTypically with tropical fish, unfertilized eggs go bad. You might try to remove them from the rest so the fungus doesn’t spread to all of them.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Superman.
After months of trying to get some fry breeding in a “tidy” tank, I put a trio, (2 females and 1 male), into and overgrown 10 gallon. They think they are back in Myanmar and it’s up to them to get the population back on track! It appears that they spawn every several days, as I always seem to have new fry in the tank.
When they were in the other tank, it was well planted but not overgrown, they would burrow into the moss to spawn, but then eat the eggs or the fry… in 6 months I managed to raise only 1 to adulthood.
Hope this helps.

I have to ask… Where did you get that cool-looking green shrimp in your profile picture!
Ted, I picked up these shrimp from a guy on Aqua-Bid. It’s a Caridina cf. babaulti for lack of a better name. They are green shrimp from India. Unlike Red Cherry shrimp these grow very slowly, but my colony is up to about 75-100 shrimp now.
In addition to CPD’s, I’ve got about 10 different varieties of freshwater dwarf shrimp that I’m working with.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThanks for the info! I’m keeping them in a ten gallon that’s about half full with java moss… should be plenty of micro fauna to eat.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantDarrylR, what were you feeding them before the brine shrimp?
