Thanks for the update chr15_8!

BallAquaticsParticipantIt’s been my experience that they are about half adult size at 3 months of age. At four months old they can reproduce, and by 5 or 6 months they should be adult size.
When I keep fry in small tanks I usually change 50% of the water about 3 times a week. I have heard that the faster growing fry will produce a hormone that will slow the growth of the other fish.

Hi xanderman.
I will second that! The only other way I have produced fry in significant numbers was in a tank that was just over run with guppy grass. Even then many were lost because they were so hard to capture and move to another tank.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi Daveyravey! Thanks for the info. At £1.99 thats quite a bit less than stores around Tom.
I’ve seen them called Fireworks Rasbora and Chili Rasbora too!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThanks for the info wjcpd, and welcome to the site.
There’s a wealth of info on here about spawning cpd’s and rearing the fry. Best of luck with your new fish!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantGlen Bernie, Maryland on Jan 3. They had a tank full of juvenile CPDs for $2.98 each.
Thanks wjcpd!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantWell the best of luck with whatever you decide to do! They are really cool fish if kept in a species only tank, or in a community tank with other fish. I’ve got some set-up both ways and like both set-ups equally well.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThey will most surely spawn, but you probably won’t see any fry.
CPD’s like most Danios, are notorious egg and/or fry eaters. With other fish in the tank as well, the chance of surviving fry is pretty slim.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThanks Tom! That’s about what I paid for mine, 4.25 GBP = 6.80349 USD.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi WebGirl, welcome to the forum!
Thanks for the update on where to find these great little fish in Calgary.
I think due to limited supplies, the price of these fish will remain high for sometime to come.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHappy Christmas and a Safe & Prosperous New Year to you too Tom!
Thanks for all your time and efforts here on the site.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi Bean, welcome to the forum!
I would say if the flow is not too strong for the Cherry shrimp, it should be fine for the CPD.
When I’m growing out fry, I like to keep them stocked at 2 per US gallon or about 1 for every 2 liters. I don’t think adding 10 CPD’s to your tank would cause overstocking.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantThat’s great! They do breed like rabbits, the problem is, they are just too good at eating all the results!
I really wouldn’t read too much into the loss of your female. If you’ve only lost 2 fish in eight months it’s probably not something you could have done much to prevent. Perhaps she was just old?

December 2, 2009 at 5:36 pm in reply to: Anyone keeping some of the other new Danios from Myanmar? #14220BallAquaticsParticipantWow that really surprises me. I’ve been reading articles from PFK and the Strood Aquarists sites and thought they were widely available in the UK.
I’ve had to hunt high and low through specialty importers to get hold of the ones I’ve got.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi Darth, welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about your female. The raised scales sound like a symptom of dropsy, but your water quality doesn’t support it.
Do you have a disproportionate ratio of males to females? Perhaps they are harassing her to the point of exhaustion.
As for hiding under the spray bar, perhaps this is the best cover she can find?
Sorry for not being more helpful.
