Woke up today to some fry in my shrimp only tank.
Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new fry!
@Mcgold76 wrote:
Will the be safe with my shrimp?
They should be fine. In fact, for several years I kept shrimp in most of my fry tanks. The shrimp are an excellent clean-up crew for the tiny food particles the fry do not eat.

Have a hob filter with a sponge on intake. Will that be safe ?
That should work great. If it is fine enough that the baby shrimp are not getting pulled into the filter then it will work for the fry too.

How should I feed? Specifically stuff I can buy in petsmart. Fed them egg yolk today
The egg yoke is a great “old school” method for feeding fry. Just be careful not to add too much as it will quickly foul your water. Do you have moss and other plants in your shrimp tank? If so, the fry will find all kinds of micro-fauna to graze on there. As for PetSmart foods, I’d probably go with the best flake food that they carry and crush it into dust sized particles.
Best of luck with your new fry & keep us posted on your progress with them.

BallAquaticsParticipantIt generally works just the opposite, with more cover they become less shy. If you remove cover they will only become more shy. In my experience, if they are wild caught fish they will probably always be very timid. I figure that in the wild due to their size, they are near the bottom of the food chain. As such, it doesn’t pay to be too brave.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Shane. Mine eat Soilent Green. It makes for a perfect Danio food judging from the list of ingredients.

BallAquaticsParticipantThe only on-lines place I would recommend other than myself would be Frank’s Aquarium (http://franksaquarium.com/), but he appears to be out of them too.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantYou could easily keep a dozen in a set-up like that. Give them plenty of cover and they should be happy.

is it safe to say that because i have a heavily planted tank, that they wont go hungry?
If the tanks is big enough and mature enough, that might work. Hard to say not knowing more.
@relaxedcrazyman wrote:
will they snack on the plant matter in the tank till i can figure out their food situation?
They will pick at algae and eat whatever micro-fauna they may be able to find, but they are not vegatarians and they won’t eat your plants like some fish do.

will they also pick on the hikari pellets?
I’ve never fed these so I couldn’t say…..

BallAquaticsParticipantHi jkelly, welcome to the forum!
I’ve kept CPD’s with dwarf shrimp and other small Danios before without any problems, (the CPD’s will eat the baby shrimp though).

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Tim, welcome to the forum!
I use small plastic containers like sour cream, or chip dip comes in. I run the containers through the dishwasher before using in the fish room. I fill the container about half full of water from the tank the fish are in, then I net the fish and put them into the container. I then float the container in the tank the fish are going into and add small amounts of tank water every few minutes until the container is full. At that point I simply release the fish into the tank by turning the container on it’s side under water.
Best of luck with your breeding project!

so they will eat algae wafers? do you recommend a certain brand?
By nature, Danios are omnivorous and will eat all sorts of plant and animal matter. I purchase most of my prepared foods from http://www.kensfish.com/aquarium-supplies/fish-food-feeders/kens-premium-veggie-wafers.html. Ken has a very wide variety of high quality foods and great prices too.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi relaxedcrazyman, welcome to the forum!
I feed mine sinking foods such as algae wafers, and shrimp pellets. If the shrimp are reproducing, they will eat all the baby shrimp they can find also. Providing lots of cover for them to hide in will often help to make them less shy.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI know the condition you are referring to, but I’ve never seen it in CPD’s.

At first I thought something was wrong, so I tested the water, all was well. Turns out they were just finishing up their yolk sac.
Of all of the egg layers I have spawned, the newly hatched fry just lay around are attach to the glass or plants for up to several days before becoming free swimming.
Very cool photos by the way. I especially like the one with the finger. Shows just how tiny these fry are. Thanks for sharing with us!

Hey I do believe I got the pearls from you.
I believe you’re right. They look like they are doing very well for you. No doubt they love the room and the plants. Keep us posted on your tank upgrade!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantI think once your moss bushes up a bit, you should be good to go. Maybe if your lucky you water temperature will drop closer to 70F with the power filter out of the tank too. Best of luck!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantVery nice photos! Thanks for sharing them with us.
