i have yet to breed these beautiful fish. i have wild caught CPD, will this make it any more difficult to breed them??
no sign of breeding behavior at all. i think the fact that the fish store i got them off gave me 11, but 7/8 are male!
99% + of galaxies sold are wild caught, so there’s a good chance they are. But people here and elsewhere have gotten theirs to breed just fine despite that.

ParticipantCongrads Plymbloke!
That’s totally awesome.

ParticipantWell natural selection doesn’t always pick the most beautiful creatures.
Humans on the other hand rather have the pretty ones.
Now, for example, I have a small ( but fully adult ), pale female that doesn’t look as good as the others. I assume that other people also have ones that look less nice as the others.
I for one believe that the beautiful coloaration and golden ‘sparkle’ of this fish ought to be mantained even if that means fewer born in capitivity.
I’d hate to see these fish plentiful but dull looking in a few years. That’s make me wish they’d never been found at all

ParticipantI think within this years is a bit too soon. Afterall, they are really new still. I think most breeders are concerned enough with just increasing the population before they are bred for specific traits.
On the other hand, it would be best if better (is more colorful, bold, beautiful) fish were used for breeding rather than runts and so on. I have this small female in my tank that hasn’t colored up like the others and I suspect it’s because of her genes. I’ve had them long enough to know it’s not just because she’s young.

i was glad that i found that day 9 fry’s and the day’s after i found eggs and more hatched fry.
So…What do the eggs look like?
atlantis_child
ParticipantIf you don’t want or have a seperate tank to put fry in you can use a fish net breeder to keep the little ones in.
They’re not too expensive at all.
atlantis_child
ParticipantWell actually I’m going to keep the fry in the 20 gallon till they’re big enough to swim in it without being eatedn by the other fish. I found a place that sells “fish net breeder”s with really small holes in the mesh for them so I’m sure they’ll be fine in that.
I’ll use the 5 gallon for raising my baby snails (catfish seem to have a liking for munching them up).

ParticipantWelcome symmo
As this topic relates more to breeding than habitat I’m moving it to the breeding section. You’ll get more responses there anyway.

Atlantis child dont be afraid to let it all out, be proud lol…Setting up a third tank is where it all becomes a slippery slope to true fish geekyness..
My kids are sick of visiting the local fish shops, half the time they havent even had new stock in and im dragging the kids around for the 3rd time that week. I think there are a lot worse things to do with your time and money….I’m already accidentally referring to the 20 gallon as a 40. But getting a tank twice the size as the last one is a good way to go about tank buying, Don’t cha think?
Won’t be for a while though. I’m still a poor, unemployed student…
MacedonianLion: wow…that’s quite the list!

ParticipantUh, I don’t think I’m quite a fish geek yet.
No fry for me yet, but I spend tons of time looking at my fish tanks. ( I can see them from my desk that I work at and have my computer at, in my room ) I only have 2 tanks set up right now: a coldwater 5 gallon and my 10 gallon ‘breeding’ tank, but I just bought a 20 gallon and equipment that I’ll set up soon…
And 3 dwarf sunset platies that are so cute!!
I’ve started to collect, strain and boil water to lower my water PH and water hardness.
I tried hard convince my parents to let me build a koi pond in the backyard, and almost suceeded.
I keep a diary solely for accounting all my fish doings.
And I was looking at buying tye-dye cloth with fish on it at the fabric store and making a dress out of it, but that doesn’t count. Does it…?
(and now I really. really want it, so I’ll go back when I get the chance!)Oh geez, I sound like I’m in denial.
Am I a fish geek? I don’t know really, make your own conclusions.
