    Hey thanks!
If money and space wasn’t an issue, I’d have even more! The kiddie pool is my favorite, just because I can still see the fish swimming around.

If you suspect any more snails of being near death, go ahead and place them in a seperate container so they won’t foul the water when they die. If your snail doesn’t close his shell when you pick it up or touch its foot- it is dead.
    :( sorry bout your snails…

    Congrats!
I don’t know how big they will be in two weeks, but if they can’t go into the community tank yet, maybe you can get some daphnia or something else going that will live for a while in the tank. Why couldn’t they be taken care of in the tank they are in now?
    Good luck with them!! :)

They sound like brigs to me too, especially since they aren’t eating your plants. What color are they?
Most people with apple snails supplement their diets with “snail cookies” kinda like algae wafers with other ingedients and blanched veggies. They also appear to like duckweed- which is one plant they will eat! lol. I give my shrimp and snails- Crab bites, since it contains a little extra calcium for their shells.
Brigs are very lazy snails. IF they aren’t looking for food or mating, they are conserving energy! haha.
When did you notice the baby snails? Did you see the eggs that she layed? They usually have a hundred or so babies so something must have happened to the rest of them :/
http://www.applesnail.net is a good site with lots of info on snail care ;)

Apple snails do not die after mating. What else is in your tank? Maybe something is bothering them and they can’t open up to move around and eat. what do you feed them? What size tank?
The two year old mostly likely died of old age. If you got them at the same time, they may be the same age, and 2 years is just about tops for apple snails in tropical tanks. Do you know if it is a Cana or Brig?

You can cut a hole in a filter sponge to fit over the intake, or cut a piece of pantyhose and rubberband it over the intake.
Personally I wouldn’t risk not covering it with fry. Maybe others have successfully done so.

Aquaclear is a good brand, I like these and penguin filters- AC allow you to customize the media though- which is another good option.
Have an AC on my CPD tank as well!

It has never been a problem for me- mine doesn’t seem to make it in the filter, but small bits that break off get trapped on the intake. This probably won’t happen in a CPD tank though- it happens with cichlids for me!
Now, duckweed is another story :)

There is no need to remove fish from a tank to clean it. Do you have a gravel vac? a Gravel vac will take all the detrius out of the gravel and won’t suspend it in the water colum either if you are careful (not that it would really hurt the fish anyway) IF your fish seem stressed from big water changes-do smaller ones, more often.
    Hope she pulls through!

Looks nice. Just one thing- take that plant out of the pot, it will grow much better in the gravel and the roots are probably bound in that rockwool.
Also, if your anacharis still has the plant weight around the base- take that off too, it will constrict the stems and possibly rot the base of the plant.
:) good luck with your fishies!

In addition to some of the things a_c said:
    1) buy all my plants from fellow hobbyists- much better quality, bigger portions and great prices!
    2) I use shop lights from a hardware store and daylight bulbs instead of expensive lighting.
    3) Use screw in compact fluorescent bulbs in my old incandescent 10 gallon striplight
4)Have a SO who strongly discourages new tanks in the house ;)

Have you ever tried tubbing outdoors with tropical fish? this is the first year where I live in a place with room to do it- now have a yard and not in an apartment.
If you haven’t, give this article a look see http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/ponds/Sipes_Summer_Tubbin.html
The author had 100s of zebra danios breed for him, as well as many other fish. Granted, CPD aren’t zebras, but they are somewhat similar in breeding i think.
these are not permanant places for the fish- everyone will find a place inside or at someone else’s fishroom ;) before the temperatures start to fall. Also the organisms are great live food for these fish, can you say mosquito larve?.. yum yum.
    ;)

Predators are more of a concern in outdoor ponds, but should be able to control that with a net or cover over the tub if they are a problem in your area.
    Edit:
I am also planning on throwing some praecox rainbows, swordtails, endler’s livebearers, bettas and cherry shrimp in various tubs this summer.
