I’m quite keen on getting some Java Moss for my tank so the Celestial Pearl Danios can breed and have hiding places for the fry. I finally upgraded to a bigger tank (20 gallon) this past week and am really enjoying it.

After some Googling I saw some reports that Java Moss can clog the filter and get stuck in the pump motor. How true is this? Does anybody have any experience with this? Is it possible to keep Java Moss sustainably in a tank?

Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!!

It has never been a problem for me- mine doesn’t seem to make it in the filter, but small bits that break off get trapped on the intake. This probably won’t happen in a CPD tank though- it happens with cichlids for me!
Now, duckweed is another story :)

My java moss is wedged at the bottom of the tanks between other plants. It doesn’t float off. It should be fine unless it’s really close to the filter or your filter is super strong…Which probably ain’t good for those fry.

It is an external filter, and looks like this:

From what I’m hearing, there doesn’t seem to be major problems with Java Moss. Thanks guys! I think I’ll go ahead and get it.

Yeah this one is awesome. To be honest, it’s the first power filter I’ve ever owned. However, I can tell that this is a good quality one, from the way everything fits together and the way it’s designed. The outflowing water is very smooth, no turbulence, and you can adjust the flow rate. 3 layers of media – sponge, activated charcoal, and biological (Bio-Max). All thanks to German engineering! Very happy with it.

Aquaclear is a good brand, I like these and penguin filters- AC allow you to customize the media though- which is another good option.
Have an AC on my CPD tank as well!
