dont feel bad. just give them the best conditions that they can possibly have. do try and breed them though. feed them lots of live food and quality flakes/pellets. toss them into a smaller tank that is loaded with java moss. pull em out the next day. in a week or so start feeding bbs to your new fry.
i keep lots of rainbowfish species and most of them are endangered in the wild. some are even on the brink of extinction. do what you can to keep them going and once you have enough, start passing on the young.
good luckmisterchengmouaParticipantmy reason would have to be that CPDs arent the fastest eaters. remember, they will be competing with the tetras for food. you’ll probably have to feed more than you need to just so that the CPDs get to eat.
misterchengmouaParticipantscales flared out…sounds like dropsy. i just lost my big male Betta macrostoma to that. i also lost half of my wild caught Puntius denisonii(roseline sharks) to that as well. it only seems to happen to my expensive wild caught fish…
misterchengmouaParticipantwell, yesterday i received a group of wild choprai. really really beautiful fish. they are in QT at the moment and are being treated for any potential parasites. still in the process of setting up their new home. i may start a separate thread on the setup. maybe even with pics. keep an eye out for it!
misterchengmouaParticipantwell, i got my first batch of CPD 3 days ago. really nice fish-wild caught-i got them from a friend. and today, i just got another batch from one of my LFS. 25 fish total. they are still in QT at the moment. i am still in the process of setting up their new home and getting their new tankmates.
misterchengmouaParticipanti got mine locally. from someone in MAS(minnesota aquarium society). if you are located in the states, they are really easy to find.

!!UPDATE!!
I JUST GOT MY FIRST BATCH OF CPD!!! really nice! 13 wild fish!!! wish me luck!misterchengmouaParticipantwell. the first one is a Melanotaenia spenldida sp.. the second one – hybrid. with rainbows, you have to be very careful that you get them from a reputable seller. there are tons-i mean TONS of hybrids out there- mainly from those fish farms out there that doesnt know anything about fish. it is so easy for ‘bows to cross breed. people buy them and throw them into the same tank and because they are so easy to breed, the owner doesnt have to do much to get fry. if they are lucky enough to get them to grow up enough, they sell em to their LFS under some name and because not all LFS owners know rainbowfish, they take it as a real ‘bow. there are too many hybrids out there!!!
rainbowfish come from OZ and NG and its almost impossible to get them imported and a lot of them are endangered or already extinct in their natural habitats. we dont need anymore crappy hybrids!!!
sorry about all of that up there-i just get really into it…
the main fish species that i keep are rainbows and i make sure that i get all of mine from legit breeders.misterchengmouaParticipanti would say bad idea. you dont know what those things are. they could be potential parasites. they could be carrying dieases. you never really know. i would say, better to be safe than sorry.
