ParticipantI just plonked the sponge from the air filter into my external cannister. A few weeks later I took it out when I got eggs. Instant matured filter.
It will however, suffer a little loss of bacteria as the fry dont produce much waste. A mini cycle is almost inevitable.
I combated this by adding floating plants and doing regular water changes.

Participanteggs are 1-2mm diameter. Clear to amber colour. Easily seen with the naked eye, but a light is useful. Bare bottom tanks make it infinitely easier. I tried to find some in a planted tank (i saw them being laid) and after an hour I couldnt find them anymore. Thats natures way of protecting them i suppose.

ParticipantFrom what I can gather they are an Mbuna cichlid from Malawi. I beleive those guys like rocks and very hard water e.g. tuffa rock etc. but I’m afraid thats where my knowledge ends.
I’ve never really like those kinds of fish…. yet.

ParticipantMy eggs took 3-4 days. However, the fish will snack on them if they are left in the tank with them.
Generally when I put them in the breeding tank I do a mid morning check for eggs. As soon as I spot some I take out the fish.

ParticipantSTE12000 is selling some on ebay at the mo. They are F1’s.
As to whether it is best to mix F1 i dont know.. depends if yours are wild caught or not.

ParticipantI think chopping their head off is more humane than cold water or flushing.
Cold water and flushing are not going to be a nice way to go. I certainly wouldn’t want my last moments to be swimming in sh*t.
Whilst nasty at first impression, severing the spine at the head of the fish provides the quicker kill.
Personally, I would rather my fish went to sleep and never woke up… I just got some clove oil from the pharmacist – its really cheap.

ParticipantI lost some of my first wild CPDS to it. I think they are sensitive to temp changes when stressed.
By the way. When euthanasing a fish if possible I use clove oil to put it down. Its the fish equivalent of a lethal injection..

ParticipantI have found the best treatment for mystery illnesses in the tank is daily water changes and carbon filtration combined.
I have a little tiny filter with some carbon in it which I pop into the tank. Daily 10-15% water changes with a little extra decholrinator.
If symptoms persist I use a broad spectrum treatment such as Esha 2000. Its a dutch treatment which covers a wide range of illnesses.
I would make sure that your dechlorinator binds heavy metals as that can sometimes cause erratic swimming and behaviour.
