I read somewhere that the nutritional value of brine shrimp is only within their first 24 hrs of hatching, while they still have the yolk sacks. Once they lose this yolk sack and are feeding, the nutritional value to our fish is minimal. I set up a brine shrimp hatchery in the tank the day before I want to feed, add a pinch of eggs and feed as soon as I see at least half have hatched. Empty and rinse the hatchery and put it away until the next time I want brine shrimp. No mess, no hassle, no extra tanks!

I feed flake food, which they won’t eat until it sinks! Frozen blood worm and frozen daphnia which they love. I have to ‘shave’ slices off the frozen blocks of blood worm otherwise the pieces are too big and they won’t touch them. I also feed newly hatched brine shrimp a couple of times a week. Within the first week their colours really came out and they’ve settled in nicely.

Mine have just produced free-swimming fry and their tank is at 23-25 (depending on time of day).

Guess I’d better put the heater back in then! As without it my temp is dropping overnight to around 20-21c at least with the heater it was holding at around 24c.
Congratulations by the way! Are you seperating the fry or keeping them with the parents? What are your other stats?
    Cheers

Will probably end up moving back to Suffolk where we spent 4 1/2 yrs before coming up here. I suspect that’s where we’ll end up, but at least I know the area so it won’t be like starting somewhere totally new. I just hate all this waiting about and not knowing from one day to the next, what the army will decide to do next.
Luckily hubby was here for two months over Christmas, so it wasn’t too bad, but generally been a rubbish year, he’s only been home 3 1/2 months total in the last twelve.

I’ve removed the heater from the danio tank as I couldn’t get the temp below 24c, It’s now down to 22c and the males are jigging about quite happily trying to impress the females who are showing absolutely no interest whatsoever! Re-doing tanks tomorrow, so fingers crossed that might spur them into action.

I was thinking of mixing some peat in the new substrate, do you think that would help lower the ph a little? or should I just leave it?

Yeah, I think it must be the old A1.
In theory we should get a minimum of 3 months notice, but I know people who have received posting orders on a Friday to be in their new post by the Monday! We should know by the end of May, hubby’s back middle of May & we could be moving anytime between mid June and March next year. Nightmare. I reckon if he’s gotta go before summer hols, I’ll stay here with the kids until they break up from school and then follow him. Or if the date falls after september, I’ll see if we can get a quarter early and I’ll move with the kids so they can start new schools in September. Either way, it’s always a pain in the backside. At least this should be our last move until he ‘retires’ and learns to live as a civvy in the real world. Only 6+ years to go.

Got to register to see your pics!
I’m not from round here, hubby’s army, I was born in Somerset, grew up in Canada. Lived up here for nearly 4 years and just beggining to really settle in, so of course, we now have to move.
Aquatic Fanatic is on the A168 just outside Northallerton, it looks like a big farm, car park’s a bit pot holey! Usually a good selection of fish at reasonable prices though. OOOPs, I just realised the time, gotta go take the kids to Judo, or they’ll be late, again.

Well Tan, they’ve definately been showing signs that they want to breed, ie the little dance display etc but nothing yet. However I’ve only had them a couple of weeks so we’ll see. I’m hoping to re-do one of my tanks with better lighting, substrate etc this weekend and move them into that, as the tank they are in has just got whatever plants I had available thrown in and it looks a mess. I’m also waiting on some java moss to arrive (hopefully before the weekend) I was considering putting some peat in there as well to try and lower the ph a little, but I might wait and see if they will still breed even at a ph of around 8!
The garden center at Morrisons does have a few fish, but the quality is not brilliant, nor are the prices. Most of the guppies I bought from there died or had major whitespot.
I tend to shop at Maidenhead Aquatics in Poppleton, aquatic fanatic in Northallerton or Forestmoor garden center in Calcutt (near knaresborough) There’s another one at Bishop Monkton that look pretty good, especially if you are into Marine tanks. I didn’t see anything I wanted as far as freshwater fish are concerned and they seemed abit pricey.
It certainly is a small world. You’ll have to let me know next time you’re up this way, you can come and give me some suggestions on my rather sad looking tanks, which seem to multiply everytime I go out! My husband is going to go mad, He bought me the first tank before he went away, thinking it would give me a project to keep me busy. Little does he know, I now have 4!! Trying not to think about our next impending move and how on earth I’m going to keep everyone alive. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Ha! I’m 3 miles from Boroughbridge! Drop the kids off at school there everyday. I’m at Dishforth Airfield, at least for the next few months anyway. May well be moving by the summer though. Hopefully will have had breeding success before then.

I saw your pics on the tropical fish forum and replied saying I wasn’t going to get any as I didn’t have the space! Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Besides I got the fish for free, how could I say no? I’ll give them some time to settle in then hopefully I can breed them and resupply the lfs.
Gorgeous tank btw. I’m hoping mine will fill out alot more to give the fish more cover.

I’m in North Yorkshire at the moment, but may be moving to Suffolk sometime in the next year.
