katkinParticipant
I keep a couple of ottos in with my cpd’s and they are perfectly fine and certainly help with algea, but don’t seem to touch any hair algea I get.
KkatkinParticipantI would love to try tubbing, but with soooooo much rain I’d be afraid all the fish would be washed away! How do you deal with too much rain?? (can you tell, I live in the uk?) Plus I’d have to have enough room in the house for them in the winter or I’d end up with fish lollies.
KkatkinParticipantI’ve just discovered my cpd’s absolutely love Hikari Micro Wafers. I had some to try some of my other fish on and thought I’d put a pinch in for the cpd’s and they went mad darting about making sure they got every last one. They even braved the surfice to get those that had stayed floating, and I’ve never got them to the surface to eat before.
KkatkinParticipant:lol: You are NOT alone! Admitedly, my house isn’t too bad (yet) So far three tanks in the front room and a small one in my daughters bedroom. I blame it all on my husband, he bought me a tank before he went away to give me something to do while he was gone. By the time he got back 3 months later i had 4 tanks up and running!
Now I want to seriuosly breed my cpd’s all hell is going to break loose. I’m getting a stand for a four foot tank, which will actually hold 2X 4ft tanks (he! he!) BUt instead of two 4ft tanks I’m going to have the 4ft on top with two 2′ tanks underneath for growing on fry. plus I’ll have to put the spawning tank somewhere. Luckily the spawning tank is only 16″ x 6″ so it can probably sit on the windowsill.
Water change day is always a mess, with buckets everywhere and trying to keep my 2yr old from playing in it!
I’m dreading trying to move them all this summer, with styrofoam boxes, bags, fish, plants, gravel etc everywhere. Plus the removals men getting in my way.The best part is, my husband can’t complain as he desperately wants a marine tank in the next few years. Seeing as what he wants is going to cost a fortune, he doesn’t dare say anything about my tanks. (me spending mere hundreds compared to his estimated thousands!)
Now where did I put that magnifying glass?
KkatkinParticipantHi chr15-8, I think I’m up to 14 fry, but like you I’m hoping there won’t be anymore until later in the year. I’m still working out how I’m going to keep everything alive when I move in August! Hopefully I won’t need to worry too much about temperature.
KkatkinParticipantSounds about right to me. I can’t see shops paying much more than that. I might have a ring round this week and see what the shops will offer. I’ll let you know what response I get.
KkatkinParticipantI’ve seen a couple of guys build larger scale fish houses on another forum and one of them used the silver lined insulation which helps to reflect light and heat therefore you don’t need as much lighting. Only thing is I can’t remember what it’s called and I have a feeling it’s quite expensive. I’m pretty sure they were in the UK though, so might be worth trawling the internet. Sorry I can’t be more help.
Let us know how you get on.
KkatkinParticipantHi a_c, I wouldn’t worry too much about the hardness of your water, I have hard water, everything furs up with limescale, and a ph of 8, but still getting spawning, if not huge numbers of fry. (up to 13 now)
I know what you mean about being impatient, I’m scanning the tank constantly looking for fry, it took 2 months before I saw my first. Seriously want to set up a spawning tank, but still need to rehome my Betta first!
KkatkinParticipantYou are a fountain of useful information. I used to do a lot of cross stitch, but haven’t touched it for months, if not years (fish are much more interesting!) I’ll have to have a dig round and see if I’ve got any of the plastic canvas. If not, there’s a shop locally that sells it. New project for the weekend.
Oh and I found the little tank, my daughter has a male siamese fighter in it!
So looks like he’ll have to be rehomed!
KkatkinParticipantMine love frozen daphnia, micro worms, frozen bloodworm and bbs. I’ve given up on the flake food as it tends to float and they don’t seem particularly interested in it anyway.
KkatkinParticipantI’ve got a small tank somewhere, I’ll have to see if I can find something to use as a grid in the base. They are spawning in the community tank, but as you say, I think the eggs are getting eaten as I’m not finding more than 3 fry at a time. Plus there’s the problem of catching the little buggers in the community tank, I usually end up pulling half the plants out in the process! Then find I’ve managed to catch two males instead of one of each.
I think I may leave things as they are until after the move which is looking like it’s going to be July rather than August. I need to get organised for transporting the fish I’ve got rather than trying to move loads of babies. I was hoping we’d be moving after the babies were old enough to rehome, but I think 5 weeks is going to be pushing it.
So fo now, the adults will stay in one tank and I’ll transfer any babies to the spare 15 G until we move.
Thank you so far for all the advice.
KkatkinParticipantHow have you managed to take such fatastic photos? They look great.
KkatkinParticipantAt the moment I have 17 in a heavily planted 15G tank and I’m finding 1-3 fry every few days. So far up to 13 fry in the breeding net. I’ve set up my other 15 G with a single piece of bogwood covered in java moss. I am planning to try your suggestion and move one female into this tank, leave her for a couple of days to fatten up on live foods. Then I’ll try adding a male overnight and see what happens, hopefully, as soon as they’ve spawned, I’ll remove the adults back into the planted tank and fingers crossed there will be loads of fry.
I’ll be moving this summer and the cpd’s will all be moving into a 4 ft tank. Do you think I should try dividing it and having the females one side and the males on the other? That way I could use the 15G they are in now to pair fish off (ie breeding only tank, bare bottom with just java moss) and the other 15 G as a fry tank.
I think my husband will kill me if I set up all 3 tanks when we move, He’s hoping I’ll reduce the number of tanks I’ve got rather than increase them!
KkatkinParticipantMine are at temp 24C and ph 8. Not huge amounts of fry, only 8 so far.
KkatkinParticipantThat’s fantastic! I think I’m up to 8. 5 in the breeding net, one I can’t catch and 2 so far in the tank I was going to close down this weekend.
