katkinParticipant
Finally found an LFS nearby with some cpd’s. Couldn’t believe the price though. £4.50 Each! I even managed to get the guy to pick out only females. Keeping my fingers crossed now, and hoping I’ll get some more fry with new blood!
katkinParticipantJust a thought, but could it have been old age? Does anyone know yet how long these guys live for? It may have just been coincidence that you also lost an otto.
I f you are not sure how old the adults were when you first got them, they may be older than you think.
KkatkinParticipantThey are indeed, adorable! I’ll see if I can get the camara working this afternoon and post some pics.
KkatkinParticipantMy albino cories breed every month or two. I have two females and two males. Feed live foods whenever you can to get them into condition. The temp is at 24C and spawning always seems to take place within a day of a large water change. If they spawn in the community tank, I try to remove as many eggs as possible to a seperate tank. If I’m on the ball and notice when the female is ready to spawn, I’ll move her and whichever male is chasing her to a spawning tank.
The female will clean an area of either tank glass, filter or sometimes the heater then deposit the eggs on the cleaned area. They eggs are very sticky.
Once spawnnig has finished, I’ll remove the adults and return them to the community tank.
Keep an eye on the eggs and remove any that get fungus growing on them. They will hatch in about 4 days. I feed microworms and infusoria for the first week then slowly introduce crushed flake and newly hatched baby brine shrimp.
Hope that’s of some help.katkinParticipantLovely looking fish. At a guess I’d say they are female, gavid spots a bit of a giveaway. Less brightly coloured etc.
Good luck with the breeding.
KkatkinParticipantWhatever small live foods you can get hold of is worth a try. You’ll have to let us know how you get on. Just from observing my own wild fish, they don’t tend to pick food from the surface of the water. They will usually wait for it to start sinking.
The tank bred are happier to swim to the surface for food.
KkatkinParticipantGood idea, let us know when you’ve got them listed. I’ll keep a close watch
KkatkinParticipantHi, how much are you going to sell for as mine are about to reach sellable size also and wouldn’t want to be under-cutting you on price!
KkatkinParticipantIt’s soooo tempting to just go for it and put them in storage until I have the space! But I think my husband might notice and start to wonder what I’m up to if I keep disapearing to a discrete lock-up
KkatkinParticipantFor easy low light plants, what about the java ferns and windelov fern. I think the another plant I have is cryptocryne something or other, sorry not sure I’ve spelt that right. Don’t forget the straight vallis too. Amazon sword, not hard but heavy root feeder so needs root tabs or decent substrate to thrive. Christmas moss if you can get hold of it, is slow growing but looks fantastic once it’s filled out. Can’t think of anything else offhand.
I will try and get some photos up when I can figure out my husbands camara!

what the heck is ‘fish stick’ ?
I’m assuming it’s the tiny fry at the stage they stick to the sides of the tank. They look like little ‘fish sticks’
KkatkinParticipantWow, they are beautiful, nice tank too.
KkatkinParticipantHello everyone, I’m a 34, got 4 kids and 5 fish tanks, 1 dog, 2 cats and bottom of the priority list is my very understanding husband. Goodness knows how he puts up with me! But then, he’s in the forces, so not home much anyway. (besides, he bought me my first tank. Little did he know that it would trigger a severe case of mts-multiple tank syndrome)
I have a 190L corner tank which is a planted community with a couple of plecs, cardinal tetras, albino corydoras, zipper loach, betta (until I can rehome him or find another freebee tank for him)
4ftx1ftx15″ low light planted tank housing my 18 wild cpd’s, a dozen pygmy cories and 8 amano shrimp
(2 X) 2ftx1ftx1ft grow out tanks for cpd fry.
8″x12″ spawning tank.
So far one grow out tank has around 30+ fry at 7weeks old. The other has a similar number of fry less than a week old. I think I might divide these two tanks, giving me 4 sections for different size fry and possibly to seperate the sexes once old enough.
To help pay for my obsession, I work part time in a local farm shop/butchers
I think that’s about it.
One other thing, anyone wanting to swap cpd fry when ready, I’m more than happy to do so. Like for like.
I’m in Berkshire near Reading, UK.K
katkinParticipantGReat pics! lovely and clear. Gotta ask, what substrate have you got ? is it just a black sand or something else?
