April 10, 2010 at 12:03 pm in reply to: Anyone keeping some of the other new Danios from Myanmar? #14367ferreterParticipant
I couldn’t help myself when I saw “Micro Danio” swimming in an LFS yesterday so I broke the rules & bought 6 fish I didn’t know anything about.
Anyway I’ve been searching for hours & I’ve found them, Danio Nigrofasciatus (Dwarf Spotted Danio), so I’ve ruined my Lake Inle Biotope but they’re great, not the best looking fish but they’re tight schooling and darting about by the filter exhaust. I’m gonna pop back today & buy some more before I give them the species info.
March 23, 2010 at 1:23 pm in reply to: Anyone keeping some of the other new Danios from Myanmar? #14350ferreterParticipantWell I’ve found my shops to visit and shops to leave well alone in Dorset since moving here 8 months ago, my most local shop is OS Aquatics in Wool, Dorset & I can walk to it, the owners a very helpful biologist & runs his own breeding experiments with anything he can get hold of. He also orders me anything I’d like so really its just a question of my poor patience that takes me to the other shops for a look around.
My new setup is 10 M. Erythromicron, 9 Danio Margaritatus and on the way is Yunnanilus Brevis (not sure how many yet) for my Lake Inle setup.
I’m considering Danio Choprai too although they’re from a different river with slightly different water perameters.I’m pretty stuck with my Danios A.T.M so everything else is set to go back to market so I can set up my other tanks for a bit of breeding.
Was Erythromicron ever reclassified into the genus Danio? :
ferreterParticipantWell I’m glad thats sorted, no more problems in the tank, fish are all happy & I saw some Erythromicron yesterday and coudn’t help myself so now I have 100l with 7CPD’s, 8/9Zebras & 3 Bronze Cory’s.
2 fancy goldfish in the kitchen and a 250l barrel in the garden with a solar powered air pump, loads of plants & 7 WCMM hopefully breeding like flies. I’m gonna leave them until the weathers real nice then replace them with a couple of my prized danio’s (if I have any luck with the minnows)ferreterParticipantBREEDING?? Just trying to keep them alive for the mo’, I added an extra filter to speed things up so now there’s a Fluval 2+ and a sicce shark both turning over 400lph. The plants are growing wild & this mornings test revealed 0 ammonia, 0-possible trace of nitrIte and nitrAte was 0-5ppm.
I’ll give it a few more days then I’ll start clipping away some plants but for the minute they’re helping me out too much to worry about the aesthetics of the tank
ferreterParticipantWell I lost 2 so I still have 8 CPD’s/zebra’s (think only 2 zebra), the spikes are settling since I added a 2nd filter my ammonia is trace and nitrIte is less than 0.25mg/l with a 10% change everyday so I’m still giving myself a daily kick in the shin so that I may learn.
The Danio’s are very outgoing & cory’s are laying eggs all over the place so maybe they like really poor water??? :wink:ferreterParticipantI’m gonna crack on with the 25% RO water even though its gonna be very expensive for a couple of weeks. It will benefit both species anyway.
I’ve done 2 x 30% water changes 1 last night, 1 this morning and the tests are matching up tonight with my ammonia stable at less than 0.5mg/l, the fish look pretty happy for a change & the snails are going back into the water.
I dont understand how the plants didn’t kick in removing the ammonia, there’s tons of plants in a 100l tank and only 4 cory’s & a handfull of tiny danio’s and I was feeding them next to nothing.
Usually when I set up a new tank I dont even get any spikes since the plants take care of it all. Anyway its under control so hopefully it will stay like that.
Won’t make that mistake again!  :oops:ferreterParticipantWell its definately heavily planted and it wasn’t the cory’s its the nitrite spike I mentioned in t’other post they ain’t dead yet but only 2 of them seem untouched by the problems. I’ve got the nasties right down with latest test so I’m hoping they’ll perk up…
I’ve been a silly boy again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ferreterParticipantCheers, would it be wise to lower the GH even more then?
What I mean is do the CPD’s require me to lower the hardness or are they happy in moderately hard water (16d)Things are kind of on hold A.T.M since I made a big boo boo and forgot to add tapsafe, now I’ve put chlorine in with everything and its crashed.
I’m doing 2 10% changes a day at the mo and the cory’s have started laying eggs. What a nightmare…..ferreterParticipantGod awful in the shop, I’ve had a big shift around and the CPD’s/Zebra Rasboras are in my 100l with 4 Cory Cats and 3 Guppies.
Strange though since I’ve been around all day and all I’ve seen is 1 Zebra chasing about a CPD and I haven’t seen any more at all. I do have alot of plants in there and a couple of rocks but I’m beggining to wonder???
The only thing I can think is they’re hiden very well or the corys have had a massive breakfast.ferreterParticipantI’m pretty sure there’s people about but I found this site purely by luck. I think they’re still called Galaxy Rasboras or fireworks by most folks, shops & me till a couple of weeks ago.
It was warm enough to sit out in a T-shirt yesterday but this morning I had to de-ice the car so we’re a little way off yet. :roll:ferreterParticipantIf you look hard enough I’m sure you could find the tubs. Just an idea but do you have hand car washes in the states? I’m sure they’d be happy to hand their detergent drums over!!
I’m in the army and we use detergent for cleaning the vehicles and the drums sit around for months before the recyclers will pick them up since they have to be disposed of properly nowadays. The amount of things you have to store since hygene, health & C.O.S.H.H regulations came into play I’m sure anyone would be glad to have the space instead of the junk.If I remember Tom your in Yorkshire so you’ll be waiting longer than me since I’m a Yorkshireman (Bridlington) living in Dorset nowadays so if your gonna do it we’ll have to keep in touch and see how it goes.
ferreterParticipantI’ve already thought of that, just spent three hours solid using this method:-
1/ Hot water (wear gloves) and lots of elbow grease with a soft cloth, continued until no soap or bubbles could be seen then dried it out.
2/ Bleach solution with warm water and again a soft cloth and elbow grease.
3/ Empty & dry out with a load of rag
4/ Just for good measure, vinegar, pour in a bottle swilled around then removed the majority with rag then dried completely with the wifes expensive kitchen roll… oops
5/ Rinsed out with boiling water and dried again
They’re now sat on the patio filling up with rain water, I’m gonna wait a few weeks then I’ll put my shubunkin in there just to make sure its not toxic, he’s way too big for his tank now anyway so he can wait there until my friends pond settles in.
ferreterParticipantThe original 2 have coloured up nicely and are still very nervous, the others are pretty nervous and the zebra’s may as well be non existant.
One of the CPD’s has been quarantined into a salt and blue solution this morning after I noticed an outbreak of fungus on his tail, poor thing looked rediculous in a bare tank on his own so I dropped a terracota pot for him to sneak away.
I hope I’m right in thinking that I should only treat the one fish and not the entire population?I posted on the summer tubbing thread since I’ve been doing my research & collected some drums to put them in in a couple of months. As usual the wifes gone nuts since the garden is now full of blue drums, can’t blame her, feet 1st…. AGAIN
ferreterParticipantIt’s on, I’ve just been into work to collect 2 massive 200l blue drums used for ARDROX car detergent.
I’ll clean them out tommorow & cut the tops off then they can stay on the patio to fill up naturally until spring time then I’ll give the White Cloud Minnows a go to test the water & see how it goes.
Is it worth getting a 300w heater just on the off chance that the water temp gets low for when the CPD’s go in. I live in Poole, Dorset and its the only place that is still waiting for snow this year & it was 18+ during the day right up until Oct last year but occasionally the weather can turn.ferreterParticipant@ferreter wrote:
Thanks, I spent yesterday on the road to collect some more CPD’s.
They where in a mixed tank and almost transparent so I bought the lot ( 8 ) to hopefully give them a better life.
I checked this morning and they’ve all coloured up nicely enough to notice that at least three of the fish I bought yesterday aren’t CPD’s. I’m pretty sure they are Microrasbora erythromicron/Danio erythmomicron “Zebra Rasbora”.
They school together and seem to be very compatible so I’m not too worried but I think I’m going to clear out whats left of my 100l after an unfortunate few weeks for that tank (some weird tetra killing disease) and put them in once I’m sure that its cleared up.At the mo’ it has 8 mollies, 3 guppies, 4 bronze corydoras and 1 Krib after her mate sadly passed away. I’ve got a friend that deals with cichlids who would like the krib and I can find a home for the livebearers but I’d like to keep the corys if its possible……. dependant on the general consensus of the good members of your forum.
