Haha… but good point, I wonder if any plants grow at that depth. It would have to be something long-stemmed with floating leaves, like water lily. I wonder if stuff will grow anyway, as long as there’s enough light reaching the bottom.
celestialdudeParticipantHey Waterfaller,
I recognize the Ludwigia Repens, the “tall trees” in your “mountain scenery” tank. What are the small-leafed ones on the bottom of the mountains? And the long green-stemmed ones? I also notice you have a moss ball in there, correct?
Love it!!!
celestialdudeParticipantWow, L777, those links are definitely interesting!! I like that tank “that Jack built”, now it would be even more interesting with plants!!
celestialdudeParticipantYour “mountain scenery” freshwater tank is simply splendid and I hope you make more tanks like that, or post more photos of it. WOW!!!
celestialdudeParticipantAlright, this is good. My tank has lots of tiny specks that are actually swimming around. It’s “infusoria”!! According to Wikipedia, “Infusoria is a collective term for minute aquatic creatures like ciliates, euglena, paramecia, protozoa and unicellular algae that exist in freshwater ponds”. So, there’s lots for the fry to eat.
Also, I’ve bought them Hikari First Bites and Sera Mikropan.
celestialdudeParticipantOK, I see many of them now. At least 5, but there could be more.
celestialdudeParticipantHi Atlantis,
I would like to offer my views on fish disease (and coincidentally, human health as well). There are 2 approaches :
1. kill as many germs/microbes as possible to prevent disease
2. cultivate a strong immune system by encouraging friendly bacteria, plus also focusing on a balanced ecosystem that naturally weeds out the bad guys
It’s impossible to do (1) because germs are everywhere.
The trend these days is to treat fish diseases with “probiotics” — solutions containing friendly bacteria that actually crowd out the bad bugs. The good bacteria will do lots of helpful little tasks for you, including cleaning your tank and protecting the fish. They can also help in such an emergency that you are currently experiencing. One such product is Nutrafin Cycle.
IMHO, prevention is always better than cure, so if the conditions are right, there should be no reason for fish diseases to happen at all. This is why I am a strong proponent for a complete ecosystem including plants and full-spectrum lighting (on a timed day/night cycle).
And on the topic of human health — same idea. Prevention better than health. Natural remedies better than brute force treatments. Probiotics, not antibiotics.
Sorry to hear about the mass deaths!!
celestialdudeParticipantYes, I approved 3 new memberships today!! Tx dude for promoting this forum, you da best!!!
celestialdudeParticipantCONGRATS ATLANTIS!!! Enjoy the job!!!
celestialdudeParticipantWow nice, how does the roofing plastic fit so perfectly over your aquarium? Other than measuring it I mean… it seems like the corrugations are just right… you know? It goes up and down, up and down, looks like there’s 4 complete “rows” and you didn’t have to cut a row halfway. Coincidence?
celestialdudeParticipantYeah I’m a big fan of natural light and full-spectrum lighting. We humans might not care, but animals are more sensitive, and it definitely makes a huge difference. Lighting is important in my tanks and I have an auto-timer that simulates the day/night cycles. The 20-gallon has a Hagen Power-Glo Fluorescent Aquarium Lamp at 15W and 18 inches. And of course, it’s important for the plants, which are part of the tank ecosystem.
celestialdudeParticipantHey Ste12000 maybe when you have time someday you can show us how to make DIY sponge filters as well (only if you have spare time). And how you made those shelves too — closeups of the joinery and brackets and whatnot. Yeah it would be great to learn from the master fishroom maker!!
celestialdudeParticipantMay I be the first to exclaim, “WOWWWW”….
celestialdudeParticipantBestest of luck!!
celestialdudeParticipantHa ha… tx guys!!!
Better get some baby brine shrimp going!!!
