I would be very worried that the power filter will eat any fry that hatch. They are tiny… like eye lashes.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi spark, welcome to the forum.
I generally leave my breeders for a week and then pull them from the tank. It can be almost impossible to tell when they have spawned.
Best of luck with your breeding project!

BallAquaticsParticipantHi sdylanh, welcome to the forum.
I believe it will work just fine. I’ve never used the containers you speak of, but I do use the 5.5 gallon Tetra tanks for most of my CPD breeder set-ups. These tanks are only 10 inches tall and I often find I only have 6 or 7 inches of water in them.
Best of luck with your breeding project! Please keep us informed as to how it works out.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Dexterbaker, welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your spawning success.

BallAquaticsParticipantHi Simon. I’m really bad at Internet diagnostics of fish problems.
I treat white spot, (ICH), by raising the temperature to around 86F. As my tanks have live plants, I don’t add salt.

I have had bad problems with ordering items off websites. Do you trust this site?
I’ve made hundreds of dollars in purchases from Ken’s over the years. The one time I had a problem they fixed it very quickly. Yes, I trust them and recommend them.

And what about fri? what is good to feed them?
I feed fry green water/ infusoria for the first 10 days or so and then move them on to newly hatched baby brine shrimp. If you are looking for a prepared food, you can use the Golden Pearls in the 5-50 micron size.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi Kazonak, welcome to the forum!
I don’t feed any flake food anymore. I feed pellets, granules, and wafers. As for the Golden Pearls, I feed small fish like adult sized CPD’s the 300-500 micron size. I purchase most of my food on-lines these days at http://www.kensfish.com/

BallAquaticsParticipantHi robeclay, welcome to the forum! Sounds like a nice tank you’ve got there.
Hey MChambers, how did the Dwarf rosy loaches work out?
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantYou are very welcome. Spreading the joy and getting out good information about these cool little fish is what the forum is all about. Thank you for joining in the fun!

Can you expand on your “perferred method”? Sorry OP not trying to hijack your thread.
I have used this set-up for the past 4 or 5 years now with great success…..
5.5 US gallon tank with course black substrate and a large portion of live moss. A small sponge filter set at a very slow bubble, not much water movement. 3 female fish and 1 male in the tank for 5 to 7 days. Breeders are moved directly into another breeder set-up when removed. Within 2 weeks of removing breeders fry are present. Very simple but effective set-up.

Do you leave the fry in there for a few days or do you put the whole thing into another tank?
I put the whole trap into another tank.
Best of luck with your breeding project!
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantYou could try an egg trap. I got CPD fry using these, and lots of other Danios too, but it’s not my preferred method of spawning them. http://www.danionins.com/articles/diyeggtrap.html
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi SSTARR1701, welcome to the forum!
Very nice tank, thanks for sharing a photo with us. They will certainly spawn in your tank, but you probably won’t see any fry as they will be quick to eat the eggs or newly hatched fry.
Dennis
BallAquaticsParticipantHi ravenslax, welcome to the forum!
Over the years I’ve seen them with red, orange, and even yellow fins. As they collect these little beauties from many different locations now, I would think the color variation is related to the original collection site of the fish.

…..am I missing anything and are those parameters within a good range? Sorry about the metric
Well when U Tin Win of the Hein Aquarium visited the site where they were collecting CPD’s in the wild, the water tested at a pH of 7.3 and the conductivity of 250 microS/cm. 250 microS/cm = roughly 160.25 ppm. That said, you could even go with a bit more tap to RO ratio and make it just a bit harder. It would give you a bit more buffering capacity and thus a more pH stable water. You are definitely on the right track to work up a repeatable formula for mixing… it will make water changes so much easier.
