ParticipantHi Theresa, welcome to the forum!

Should I get more CPDs and how many could I stock in this tank?
I had a group of about 15 males in a ten gallon and they were still very shy. I added 6 or 8 Danio tinwini, (another small danio that is very out going), and they have started to venture out more now.

Or could I add a white betta to my current stock?
A while back, I kept my grand son’s betta for a couple months in a 20 gallon long with a group of about 50 CPD’s…
You can see the CPD’s in the background. The betta would heard the CPD’s around like a dog working with sheep. No one was ever hurt and he soon moved on to another tank.

When you seed a new culture, do you throw away the old culture?
Not usually. You want to get the new one started before the one you are using is not any good. With worm cultures, like micro, banana, or walter worms, it takes about a week before a new culture is producing enough to feed from.

How much of a bioload are new fry?
I try to feed my fry at least 3 or 4 times a day to promote good growth. I worry more about that than the bio-load of the fish themselves. If you feed live foods such as infusoria/green water it is much less of a problem.
@Sir Tristen wrote:
They will be easier to feed and observe in the small tank.
Agreed, I start my fry in the 5.5 gallon breeder set-ups for that very reason. I must have missed something in the thread though as I don’t see where using a small tank precludes using a sponge filter.
@Sir Tristen wrote:
Does that still seem too risky?
It’s not how I would proceed, but there is more than one way to skin a cat. If there is one thing I’ve learned about this hobby, what works for one person doesn’t always work the same for someone else.
Best of luck with your new fry. Please keep us posted.

Any thoughts on the hatchery without a sponge filter?
I have sponge filters in all my CPD breeder set-ups. When I move the fry on to grow-out tanks they have HMF’s.
I turn the flow down when the fry are small, (the first 2 or 3 weeks), but I can’t imagine keeping them in a tank without a filter.

I’m really sorry for asking so many questions.
Hey, that’s never a problem on this forum.
@QQQUUUUAADDD wrote:
When you say start a new culture, does that mean to take some of the old culture and put it into the new one?
Exactly! At some point your culture will go bad. Before that happens, you take a small amount and “seed” a new culture.
I’m not kidding when I say you can really get into culturing live foods. At one time I had so much stuff going I was spending more time with my cultures than I was with my fish…. I would culture micro algae just to feed to my culture of moina! :lol:

After you’ve had your culture for 3 weeks, what do you do?
You start a new culture. I like to keep 3 cultures going at the same time. You have the one you are feeding from, one that will be ready to feed from in the near future, and one just as a spare. This way if one crashes you still have a working culture and a backup culture.
If you are serious about live foods, I highly recommend Mike Hellweg’s book…..

ParticipantThe Golden Pearls is a very hi quality food. I don’t see any problem using it as the main diet. I would still offer a bit of shrimp sticks and algae wafer on occasion. I think once they become accustom to them they will take to them also. Here’s a video I shot of some fry going for a shrimp stick…..

ParticipantHi QQQUUUUAADDD, welcome to the forum!
If the fish you have are wild imported fish, you may need live foods to get them started. Each time I purchased wild fish this was the case for me.
When I sell CPD’s, I include a small packet of Golden Pearls just to get the buyers off to a good start. It was my experience, that many new CPD owners were trying to feed flake and other foods that stay on top of the water without much luck. I’ve seen CPD’s eat at the surface, but only when in with other fish. In a species tank they tend to stay near the bottom and wait for food to come down to them.

ParticipantHi Sam, welcome to the forum!
I would say you could easily keep 5 or 6 in your 15 litre aquarium. I normally set-up my breeders in 5.5 US gallon tanks and the way I fill them they are very close to the same volume as your 15 litre.
I’ve often heard it said that they are danios and as such need lots of space, but I don’t agree with that thinking. When you have a small group, I find they are much more at easy in a smaller tank. Just keep an eye on your water parameters and you’ll do fine.

ParticipantHi Marius, it’s great to hear you have found a system that works well for you. My friend Peter Cottle always says the best way to spawn danios is the way that works best for you!
Here’s wishing you continued success with all your breeding projects.

Participant1.5 cm is over half the adult size, they should be fine in the tank with the adults.

ParticipantHatching baby brine shrimp is very economical and not messy at all…
Get yourself a copy of Mike Hellweg’s book, “Culturing Live Foods”.
