The twrling around sounds like 2 males, but there is probably a female watching close by. I like to keep the temp at around 25C, I used to provide spawning mops & java moss and remove the mops to a spare tank along with vaccing off some of the water from around the moss (to get any eggs that were dropped there. That worked fine for me, but lately I have just left them to it & get a few fry a week that are then pulled out & raised in a separate tank. But just try and give them something to drive the feamle into (ie mops) for spawning & with water conditions kept good, they should do the rest for you.

    Good luck

I’ve only had Plecs breed from all the cats I have, however have seen Cory’s breed. They will tend to lay their eggs on a flat surface (have seen them on broad leaf plants, slate & even the glass. So I’d give them the option, perhaps a large leaf sword plant, some stone and a bit of wood for cover.

As for the number of tanks, 3 is never enough !!

I’ve got a separate tank for fry and they are scooped up placed in there now. I have had fry grow out naturally with their parents but their only company were ramshorn snails. As for feeding mine were raised on infusoria then hikari 1st bites until big enough to take crumbled flake.

Mine don’t go for bloodworm either, but this may be partly due to the fact that they have live white worms now and again. Might be the actual wriggle factor.

Ditto, although mine share with Amano Shrimp.

A darker substrate helps to give the fish more confidence, as will plenty of cover & therefore they will display their colours more. Anything that will put them slightly ‘on edge’ will pale their colours a little.

Severely stressed fish will tend to show hardly any colour at all.

Hi David, nice to meet you.

I agree with the above on planted tanks, I started my original CPDs out in a fairly bare tank with spawning mops & whilst they did produce fry it took a lot more effort than leaving them to it in a planted tank.

Whilst they may eat some eggs & perhaps some of the very young juveniles, since I adopted this method I still end up with a good batch of fry each month and they appear healthier than the original method. I suppose it’s a “survival of the fittest” thing.

As for wild against tank bred, I have found that my wild specimens tend to be a bit slimmer than my tank breds. They are much fussier eaters whereas the tank breds have been raised on flake and will accept it readily.

Do your fish readily accept flake ? If so, it is more likely that they are tank bred. When they first appeared here, people were complaining that they weren’t hardy and were just dying off. It turns out they tried nothing but flake, I tried various foods but in the end their main diet were white worms (live), baby brine shrimp & daphnia (frozen).

I inject CO2 at 75 bubbles per minute whilst the lights are on and aeriate at night. (180 Litre tank).

As for breeding, yes. My original 6 (wild) were in a 60 litre breeding tank and gave me around 100 fry. They bred within a day of being in the tank and I now use the original 60 litre as a grow out tank.

Usually, but not necessarily. Some species both the male and female have eggspots, although the male tend to be more pronounced.

I’m with mummy on this one, I don’t add salt to any tank other than those that require it (Malawi mix) and have had no problems but water quality is paramount.
