altaaffeParticipant
I don’t know about others, but my originals are all wild and I look to add / swap fry from other sources whenever I can
altaaffeParticipantI have had a few that have been like that but I suspect that it has happened when they have been caught during a water change and “bashed”.
It may be that they have lost their egg sac or something similar and not developed properly as a result.
I would suspect that it is not an inbreeding thing as my fry at the time were all F1 from the first wild stocks that appeared in Britain.
altaaffeParticipantSounds as though they are doing fine.
They could be setting up territories or getting ready to spawn (or even both)
altaaffeParticipantNice looking tank, what size is it ?
altaaffeParticipantNice startup – I’m sure they’ll love it in there.
altaaffeParticipantBeing as they are a fish that enjoys planted cover, I have substrate on my breeding tank because it is heavily planted. I also keep a dark substrate on my fry tank to help keep them at ease.
altaaffeParticipantSorry, but I’m not going to be able to post them out. I only sell locally.
altaaffeParticipantAs tedr says, I’d up the temp to around 25C
altaaffeParticipantalgae won’t really have an effect, it really will die back on it’s own.
I’ve got some appearing on new redmoor wood I’ve put in my Malawi tank and I’m not bothered – mind you the plecs tend to eat it!!
altaaffeParticipantIt’s just the wood rotting in the water, having been dry for ages it will slowly start to decay in water and the white fuzz you are seeing is the start of the decay process.
Just keep cleaning it off and eventually it will settle down, I use to remove mine and scrub it with a toothbrush in the tank water removed at water change time.

Mine have plake as their staple and chopped bloodworm, baby brineshrimp eggs & live whiteworm as treats
altaaffeParticipantThat’s the way I do it Jim, I go with the gravel vac over their favourite spawning sites and put water, eggs and fry into a holding tank to see what becomes of it.
altaaffeParticipantIt’s a species only tank although mine has shrimp as a cleaning crew. The tank is a 180litre (about 47 USG) and houses around 30 CPDs.
I’ve currently been rescaping mine so the fish haven’t bred for a while but I can see they’re settling down now.
At their height I was getting 20-30 fry a week that were removed at water change time each week and put into a separate fry tank.
altaaffeParticipantNice to meet you Jim, not quite so busy on the site at the moment and I’ve been busy elsewhere so apologies for not greeting you earlier.
Take it you are looking to breed your bunch?
If there’s plenty of plants in there, they will breed if you’ve got a mix although it can be an advantage to have somewhere separate for the fry to go before they potentially become food.
Good luck with them though

What do you use to move them? Turkey baster?
No I just use a plastic jug but you could use that
