My CPD’s were living in a 5-gallon (glass, “normal” shape) for quite a while, with plenty of plants, wood, and dark sand with a sponge filter. I had 4 adults and 8 juvies (bought, captive bred, not bred by me.) As They pretty much hid, ALL the time, and only nervously came out to eat. They had some dwarf cories in there with them, as dithers, but it didn’t make much of a difference.

Between the juvies growing out, and the fact I was ready to add 3 more adults I’d had in quarrentine, I moved the whole lot of them last night. They went into a 10-gallon glass tank, with the same plants and wood, on a substrate of eco-complete planted tank substrate and the same sponge filter, hooked into a slightly stronger pump. I don’t know if it was the larger space, or the new 3 finally brought the numbers up to where they felt comfortable, but they’ve been in the new tank less than 24 hours and they’re shoaling about the tank, all over the bottom 6 inches, like I’ve NEVER seen them do in the months I’ve had them.

All I can really say is “wow”. They’re a beautiful little fish when I can only get a peek at them at feeding, but they’re just SPECTACULAR shoaling out in the open.

Mine reacted the same way when I moved the java moss around so instead of being one big clump it was spread out. Also, I added my 3 white clouds, which I’ve noticed in the past put them more at ease, but was afraid they would munch up the eggs and fry.

But then I read in one of Dr. Axelrod’s books (great guy, writ many books on different fish, their habitats, how to breed and so on. Also discovered some new species.) that white clouds leave both eggs and fry alone.

I trust his judgement on that.

The effect is wonderful. Not only do the fish not hide anymore, but have colored way up more and their gold spots ‘shine’ more.

Just hope if I get fry it will be from the galaxies, not the white clouds, who are also in a better breeding place… Not that I’d mind a few more white clouds, but that ain’t the point of the tank. So be good, fishies!

I just obtained 7 captive bred CPDs and they are in 40 gallon quarantine with 15 White Cloud minnows, 5 Chocolate gourami, 4 Croaking gourami, 5 SAEs and 7 Harlequin Rasboras.

They are shoaling and appear to be very active. I’ve actually been sort of surprised at the CPD’s level of aggression… they’ve been pushing around male White Clouds twice their size.
