Hi everyone, when people visit my fishhouse they are supprised to see endlers liverbearers in tanks next to rare and hard to find dwarf cichlids, more than once someone has muttered something about liverbearers being for beginners…
Well my females are kept in their own tank, usually around 20-30 to the tank, most have sold this week and i was left with my 3 fully grown breeding fish (the rest are kept virgin) yesterday i walked past and noticed a fry scooting around the top, furthur inspection showed one more under the moss, yes i know its nothing unusual or hard to do but this is the first time i have actually watched them give birth.
I had to lie on my stomach to watch but it was certainly worth it, one female seperated herself from the others and hid in the moss, i then watched as she pushed the young out!between 1 and 5 in very quick succession, i was waiting with my net and rescued 28 fry and placed them in the baby corydoras tank, normally they are left with the parents and a few get ate. I now know that this female gives birth on the 20th of every month so i can keep my eye on them for future broods.
So even after 15 years in the fishkeeping and keeping/breeding some “hard” species i have had as much, if not more pleasure watching a simple female liverbearer give birth….WHO SAYS LIVERBEARERS ARE FOR BEGINNERS.

the hobby is down-right addicting! My daughter went with me to the state-wide annual fish club auction yesterday. What a blast! I missed a great looking Queen of Arabesque pleco (L260), and she missed a set of four scarlet badis she had her eye on (we didn’t bring enough money), but she came away with a pair of kribs and a pail full of ornaments, and I got a bucket of pleco wood and a bunch of food for cheap. Great fun, and my girl’s all fired up to breed fish now. She’s got endlers, plecos, corys, and now a pair of little peaceable cichlids, at least until they start to breed. Once the CPD fry are a couple weeks older, she’ll get a little shoal of them, too!

Here, here! to the fresh new wonders fish-watching brings each day!

That sounds great, one thing i have never done is join a local fish club. I always imagine that they are full of old men in cardigans who frown upon the young generation and new ideas ? I know its not like that and it would be the best way to broaden my knowlage but i just cant get over that mental image… I wish your daughter luck with her new fish, especially the kribs they are an ideal starter cichlid and will give hours of entertainment, certainly one of my favourite fish.
