After much convincing on my part, and lots of promises I’ll try to keep, I’m allowed to buy a roughly 30-35 used gallon tank with all acessories. My parents are hard to sway on my fish “obsession” as I heard them say.
Nonsense!l They should meet one of you true fish geeks…Anyway, in the begining I had my 5 gallon.
Then I got a 10 gallon from my sister (at my request) little trouble…”That’s it, no more aquriums!)
Then I got a 20 gallon as well…”Ok, that’s really it. No more at all! Besides, you don’t have any more room!)
Now I was going to the fabric store today, saw garage sale, stopped to take a looker. Saw nice tank and stuff. Knew I’d be kicked out of the house if I just brought it home, so continued, went home. THought and planned all evening how I would approach the subject.
Made list of what I’d do if I was allowed to get it.
Talked to mom. No immediate “No!”. Talked to dad. No immediate “No!”
Let them talk it over…Got the OK!!! Happy! Happy!
Now my plan is to move everybody from the 20 to the 30 and use the 20 to breed and raise dwarf sunset platies! I got 3 males, will get females once all is set up.
Even if I was “obsessed with fish.” What’s wrong with that…? No really, I’m not, I have tons of other interests.

Sit and explain to your mum and dad that their are far worse things a teenage girl could be spending her money on, tell them they should be thankful that your not out drinking or taking drugs…Well done you sound a decent well adjusted person to meSeptember 8, 2007 at 3:49 pm #12112atlantis_childParticipantThanx ste12000,
I knew this was the only possible way I’d be able to get the tank.
Have played the “I could have worse hobbies…” card though. The way my 20 gallon is set-up right now is pretty awesome though. I’ve got pieces of slate done up so there are lots of bridges and hiding places for the fishies that they seem to like. Interesting to look at to.
I’ll take a picture so I can try to duplicate it. Maybe share it with you guys too. Pic of planted galaxy tank too.

Trying to figure out how many gallons my new tank is. According to my dad’s “experienced calculation it is a 20 gallon. But it has the same dimensions as my old 20 gallon except height, where the new one is taller.
He says my 20 gallon really isn’t 20, it’s more like 15! But that’s impossible! I know, I’ve change the water for that damn thing! And acoording to him, the new one is 20…But according to my calculations (on internet calculators) the ols one is 20, the new one 22. Fooled me…
Oh well, it’s still a deal.
Dunno if I’ll move the fish now… What do you think? Is it worth it?

September 9, 2007 at 7:52 pm #12134CrazedpufferParticipantWhat are the tank dimensions?
September 14, 2007 at 4:05 am #12163atlantis_childParticipantWhat are the tank dimensions?
Different every time somehow…
But the bucket of water test indicates 22 gallon.
I’ll leave the other fishies alone and use this one as a platy/platy fry raising tank (w/tank divider).
I’m still moving things around in my room. I made a lot of promises about my room and the unkeep of it, so it looks like a war zone. But of course that’s required to make clean, yah?

I made a divider and that’s in place too. Males on the one side (2 now, still trying to catch the other bugger from the community tank. It has way too many hidey holes…), very pregnant females on other.
Nice rocks, long plants.. It’s a “breeding tank on display,” so not very minimalistic. I’ll post a pic soon.

“Getting the fish to breed isn’t really so hard. The real problem is keeping the TANKS from breeding!”
Good luck keeping some walking space in your room as your aquaria continue to accumulate! Even my 5×10 foot study has 2 10g’s and a 6g… Luckily my wife enjoys/tolerates them pretty well.
If you’ve got an All-Glass aquarium, then this page should be able to turn your tank dimensions into gallons. Sorry for the American “inches” — some century maybe we’ll get on board with metric:

My parents say no more tanks…So if I get more, I’ll have to rent someplace or something.

Just the one tank then some fish breed so you need more space, then you start thinking could i breed this or that species and before long you have several tanks. It happened to me started with one now on seven and considering eight. Have considered SEALING and FLOODING living room but my partner not happy with this Oh Well

http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/show_article.php?article_id=586I have to admit the American glass cage is huge, but pretty brutish compared to the piece of elegance Jack built in the UK.
As a teaser for the third link, one of the pictures on the website shows Jack sitting underwater next to one of his fresh water rays!
October 2, 2007 at 1:48 am #12428celestialdudeParticipantWow, L777, those links are definitely interesting!! I like that tank “that Jack built”, now it would be even more interesting with plants!!
October 2, 2007 at 1:57 am #12430L777ParticipantAgreed! I’m thinking cypress trees, perhaps?
October 2, 2007 at 2:20 am #12431atlantis_childParticipantOh very funny.
Although I’m rather jelous.

October 2, 2007 at 2:51 am #12433celestialdudeParticipantHaha… but good point, I wonder if any plants grow at that depth. It would have to be something long-stemmed with floating leaves, like water lily. I wonder if stuff will grow anyway, as long as there’s enough light reaching the bottom.
