After a failed breeding attempt I am renewing my attempts to get my CPDs to breed.
I was a little inspired ny a visit to Ste’s fish room – especially his use of plastic canvas to sieve out eggs from the tank.
SO here is my little photo journal of setting up my small tank ready for breeding.
‘Plastic Canvas’ – found in craft stores and used for basic cross stitch. It cost me £1.79 for an A3 sized peice…. bargain!
A close up to show size of grid/holes
Whilst I was out, I bought some cheap as chip dark green synthetic wool to make spawning mops out of…
Next I rooted around in my bits of fish stuff box and found 2 suction cups to act as props for the canvas.
My tank – bare PFK aquacube
After 2 minutes of trimming I have managed to get the canvas to sit correctly.
All I have left to do is pop in my heaterstat and await the delivery of my sponge filter.
Any more comments and suggestions???

Yes I do have a planted tank.. 2 to be exact
This is the latest snap of my main tank – approx 20 secs ago
I’m due a rescape in the next few weeks. It needs some serious attention!

October 25, 2007 at 8:30 pm #12760maximumbobParticipantI have got 6… initially 10, but they travelled so poorly I was left with 6. All in great condition with the males looking really good over the past month or so!
October 25, 2007 at 8:33 pm #12762chr15_8Participantcool.

chrisOctober 25, 2007 at 9:07 pm #12763maximumbobParticipantI live in widnes (10 minutes from Ste when I dont get lost), and bought my CPDs from trimar in SW England.
I keep walking past the CPDs in Maidenhead aquatics at bold healt… £4.50 each or 5 for £20. Thats a bit pricey if you ask me!
I’m hoping to breed a fair few.. maybe enough to put a large shoal in my 180 litre tank.
October 25, 2007 at 9:11 pm #12764ste12000ParticipantHi maximumbob (simon) glad you could join us, the planted tank looks gorgeous…the spawning tanks looking great and i like the size, one thing to watch with the grid and Cpd’s..as they are so small and thin, if the grid does not reach the glass and leave’s even a slight gap then the fish can get underneath. I lost a spawn this way, i used a very large fat female and a well conditioned male, i came home to a very thin female that had obviously spawned and a male under the grid eating the last few eggs…Also watch the water level, i used to fill mine to within an inch of the top but lost 2 females due to jumping, i now leave a gap around 4 inches from the water level to the top of the tank.
It was nice to meet you last week and you are more than welcome to pop in for a chat (if you can stand the heat!!!!!)October 25, 2007 at 11:11 pm #12765ste12000ParticipantI know simon i keep looking at them aswell, i got talking to the assistant manager in there the other day, he recons that they may be wild caught!!!!! he came to this conclusion as someone pointed out two fish of another types of rasbora in the same shipment that originate from the same place in Myanmar.
He asked me if i knew about Celestials and was quite suprised to hear im a moderator on here (best forum around) and even more suprised that im actually breeding them, they even offered to take them off me in return for a credit note! very kind!!!!! they will offer 50p per fish then sell them for £4.50, id rather market them myself.
One good thing simon, if you get this breeding setup going then eventually we can swap fish between us and keep the bloodlines strong,i have wild males and captive bred females sourced directly from Pete Liptrot and Paul dixon.October 27, 2007 at 11:16 am #12789maximumbobParticipantI have made up a few dark green spawning mops this morning.
I think I’ll have one floating long one at the top, and one smaller one left on the bottom. I might even work a little bit on tidying up those plastic canvas edges as well later on.
October 27, 2007 at 12:53 pm #12790ste12000ParticipantI put a pair in last night, within 10 minutes the male was underneath the mesh!!!! aaaarrrrrrggggg. I took it out in the end and put in a very large amount of mops, iv just checked on them and counted at least 10 eggs on the bottom, ill keep my eye on them and leave them in until they are finished.
October 27, 2007 at 2:03 pm #12792maximumbobParticipantany chance of a quick snap of your mop layout.
Just want to see what you mean by a lot!
I hope I have to make more mops… my sons loved it
October 27, 2007 at 7:21 pm #12795ste12000ParticipantIts a good job im sad and took a load of pics to share with you guys, my missus thinks im crazy, i fill the memory card within an hour and am running in and out loading them onto here.
I used about 10 small mops, the male had got under the mesh so i ripped it out and quickly grabbed the nearest thing to me, a large handful of mops that were lying unused next to the tanks. I just wanted plenty of cover for the fish to feel secure in. Mops are better than moss in a bare tank because they do not leave a load of bits when removed from the tank. I could not see the back of the tank and the fish obviously felt fine in there.
Todays spawn has been the biggest yet, i left them alone for 2 hours after i first saw the eggs, the female was very thin and hiding from the male. I removed the parents after this and removed the mops, the eggs simply fall out and are not adesive. I have counted at least 60-70 eggs in the tank and there is most probably a few more.
Im well chuffed and think this is quite a result. The female used was the largest of my four and had a very rounded stomach. I think you should be ok with or without the mesh as long as you are around to take out the fish when they finish. if you want to pop round to take a look first hand im in all day tomorrow(sunday)BREEDING MALE

October 28, 2007 at 11:39 am #12817maximumbobParticipantI thought it would be nice if I posted the usual residence of my danios. I’m currently fighting a nasty bought of BBA – so its not looking exactly like I would want. I also need some top cover… but i’m working on that atm.
You might even see some of my vaillant choc gouramis in the shot too
