I’ve noticed a great deal of artistry among the tank pictures in this forum.

For any who haven’t seen the concept yet, there is a great description of how to set up a one-directional water flow hillstream tank using powerheads and buried PVC pipe for supply/return flow at:

The site also has one of my other favorite kinds of fish: hillstream loaches! Sewellia are my favorites. They are stream-lined for fast water swimming and like to swim into strong currents. My Shistura cf. balteata spend some of their time in my power filter — they swim up the thin stream of water pouring over the waterfall lip and into the hang-on-the-tank bucket! The last Sewellia I had actually swam up into the stream of water coming out of a tipped cup of water, into the store bag it came in, when I was adding water for conditioning the new fish! It surprised me and I stopped pouring the water out of the cup, so once the water stream stopped, the fish found itself suspended in mid-air and fell a couple inches into the top of the tank water below. Craziness! :o

Wow, that’s an amazing article and these are amazing fish. Their body shape is adapted to the fast-flowing waters in which they live, and like the aerofoil shape on an airplane’s wing, causes “lift” to be produced.

This is very interesting indeed — recreating a habitat that mimics a fast flowing river. I sure hope that there’s a backup power supply, I’d want one if I had such a setup.

    Thanks for the great post!!!
