Photo Contests — ideas needed!

I am thinking of holding some photo contests on this site. By “some” I mean a regular interval, say two times a year.

The purpose of these contests is to highlight the “best of the best” in terms of photography that really shows the natural beauty of the Celestial Pearl Danio. I guess you could call it an ongoing promotional campaign – to inspire aquarists to choose to breed this fish. It will also provide good visuals to decorate this site with, and make it easy for the public to see this fish in “all its colors” in one glance.

I would like to throw this out to members of the forum to brainstorm on how the contests would be implemented.

Some things to think about :

1. What would the prize be? A cash prize from a pool contributed by contest participants? If so, what is the legality of this considering that this is in Internet zone (not locked to any one country)?

2. How would the winner(s) be chosen? A panel of judges? Open to the public? How would it be implemented? Would there be potential for cheating, and how would we counteract it?

3. Would there be more than one prize? How about several categories, with a prize in each? What would these categories be? Two that come to mind right now are : Adults and fry. Would there be more than one winner in each category? (Remember, simple is better, but we want to reward enough people for their participation too.)

These contests would be restricted to forum members only, so interested participants would sign up, and hopefully become active members on the site (thus also driving up membership).

I will create a new forum category just for these contests. Users will submit their entries by posting them, so that everyone can view these entries. This way they also establish copyright (“you saw it here first”). I’ll probably request that entrants grant me permission to publish these pictures on other areas on this site, i.e. as part of the template, like Aaron Koo’s photos currently at the top.

Any other ideas? Please feel free to discuss here! I’m quite excited about this and I hope you’re with me!!!

I like this idea. Not to sure about what kind of prizes though.
I think a poll would be best to pick the winner. But make one user only able to vote one time. I can’t imagine people would go and make a lot of accounts just to win.

i wouldnt do much in terms of prices as not many people will enter. would be better if you where to highlight the winners name in a different coulor eg blue? (the mods are green and admin are yellow/orange)

winner is normally done by a hidden poll (not sure if you can hide the polls so no one can see who’s leading but a normall poll would work if not)

as you said only forum members can enter to increse the membership rate (hopefully)

Adults and fry is good. How about prettiest picture, best displaying and colorful male, nicest galaxy tank, best planted galaxy tank (glenn would like that…)?

I think one winner in each category would be best. After all, this isn’t a huge site, and there’ll probably be winners in multiple categories anyway.
