Mother dwarf sunset platy that only gave birth to 3, (but is still huge) and other girl that looks pregnant are past their due dates.
There something wrong? Anything I should do? They’re in their own section of the tank, away from the males.
I know the one mother looked pregnant when I got her and it’s been 22 days since…

November 15, 2007 at 1:49 am #12961atlantis_childParticipantAmber is still taking her sweet time about giving birth, but seems to be still getting rounder. Hopefully that’ll mean I’ll get more than 3 this time…
Silly gender-changing Jesse!
Summer, my best female is beginning to get larger too. Not large enough to think about putting her on the other side of the fence, but large enough to notice.
Unfortunately I noticed today she has aquired a little fungus on her side. Will have to get meds tomorrow.
On an after note… I should really check out and keep an eye on the others as well.
Fungus has actually become a problem at work. Usually it’s just Ich, but now fish are getting fungus, lice and tail rot too. The black moors are having the worst. Eye-fungus. Actually, the goldfish get sick the most over all. About a third are sick right now, and that’s after a few cleared from the lice.
Yesterday the last two of my favorite catfish, the neon oranges died. They had the tail rot, and despite my loving care didn’t make it. Don’t see why that would kill them, but just as I was near the end of my shift they took a nasty turn and I knew they were in their last hour. Didn’t want to pull them (read, take them out and kill in mercy) and told my fish roomate not to either.
I had to pull a pygmy catfish earlier. They’re also a favorite of mine, but this little guy was suffering. Actually, all of those kittens weren’t too happy, and nobody was buying any. We got in 6 a few weeks ago, so I took the remaining home for the fry in breeder net and expectant mom side of the tank. Of course, they found a way through at the side of the barrier and now go wherever they please.
I’m thinking of selealing that thing on the sides for good. I’m not likely to be changing it, and it looks greaat the way it is.
I’ll post pic’s of my renovations (including the plastic to live transformation, to the pleasure of the live plant cult I’m sure )
He he… Love a good ramble.

November 15, 2007 at 7:59 am #12965maximumbobParticipantone of my livebearers got stuck when having fry. She was a bit constipated.. a few shelled peas later and she was fine!
Another thing to bear in mind
November 22, 2007 at 11:16 pm #13005shepherd_690Participantwhen my platies first bred there was only 3-4 fry, they were fat for about a month…and still are,i can now get more fry by giving them a variety in what they eat…live bloodworm always does the trick with my platies and mollies, they usually give birth within 3 days of feeding them(this could just be because they were ready to go though)
ur best bet is to just feed them well and keep the tank clean…syphont the dirt out of the gravel and if they are pregnant(which is more than likely, then they will go and you should get more then 3 fry….
my platies have more and more each time they breed,
(now its becoming rediculus with the amount of fry i have….so im making a fish room lol)November 24, 2007 at 8:32 pm #13022ste12000Participant@shepherd_690 wrote:

Feeding them Bloodworm will not hurry them up with giving birth, they will go when they are ready, best bet is to wait until they give birth, mark the date on a calender, Platy’s usually give birth every 31-40 days. Remove the parent fish into a smallish tanks with filter and loads of java moss, two weeks before she’s due, this reduces stress.
Keep feeding a quality diet (most livebearers prefer green foods with a bit of bloodworm for conditioning) if there is plenty of cover for the fry then with an adult platy i would expect a minimum of around 20 fry with a maximum of around 50 in very large females.November 25, 2007 at 2:51 am #13025atlantis_childParticipantAmber has half the 22 gallon to herself. Well, and the pygmy catfish and my small hanging fry net box. The water is good, warm enough, and well-filtered and aerated.
It’s been 36 days now.
I put in lots of Hornwort. Java moss is remarkably hard to get around here. Think I’ll do a staff request at my petstore, but it’ll still be about a month probably.

November 25, 2007 at 3:29 am #13027atlantis_childParticipantDo you think the platies would appreciate a little bit of algae pellet? I know they pick at it on stuff.

November 25, 2007 at 7:04 pm #13031ste12000ParticipantShe should be ready to drop anytime soon! I think she will love algae pellets, i feed mine algae wafers and frozen bloodworm with a little bit of high protein pellet for something different. If you really want lots of baby platies, then buy a few more and introduce them to the male individually a week apart, they will all be pregnant at different times and you will soon have more babies than you know what to do with.
Just a thought!! what substrate do you use?? Platy fry tend to hug the bottom for the first couple of days while guppies tend to go straight to the surface. If yours are amongst the gravel you might not see them.
November 25, 2007 at 10:52 pm #13032atlantis_childParticipantGreat! I’ll picl some wafers up on monday

True, but it’ll be tough getting a ride to the petstore that sells then when my parents already have the idea I have too many fish.
The last girl bought was really nice in coloration, but most aren’t as pretty. I want the offspring to be as good looking as possible, so I’m going to be picky about it.

November 25, 2007 at 10:55 pm #13033atlantis_childParticipantOh, I have light, almost white aggregate. Neon orange fry would have a chance hiding! I found when I got the 3 that they swam around about two thirds down.

Oh damn! Summer just died on me. She was being treated for fungus, and as I took her out I noticed her fins were short and ragged as well.
So that leaves me with 4 males and one pregnant female. She’s seperate, and I had to move 2 of the males to the community tank because while 3 males together was fine, 4 together just wouldn’t leave each other alone and began being nippy.
So now I really do need another female huh…

December 1, 2007 at 1:32 am #13073atlantis_childParticipantStill no new fry… Anything I can do? Tried the peas. She took a small bite but doesn’t like them. Gone now. Assume the catfish liked ’em better. Giving her a bit of algae wafer each day plus regular live-bearer food and/or a blood worm or 2.
Would being around other fish (not platies) help in any way? She seems so lonely and depressed.

December 2, 2007 at 11:29 pm #13078shepherd_690ParticipantI would introduce more females, i have my platies at 1 male to every2 females,i have water lettuce in my tank and the fry hide in the long roots, but any floating plants with roots or that dnt know how to say it but goes under a inch or two in the tank with space for fish to swim between if you get me is a goos idea as most of my platies before i added the water lettuce got eaten unless i caught them
keep us updated :lol:December 4, 2007 at 12:44 am #13084atlantis_childParticipantWell I got another female, so that’s 2 femalse for every four males.
I had looked at buying another after Summer, but there was only one I kinda considered. Came back and they still hadn’t got in new ones. Got the one that wasn’t too bad Asked when they got in fish and came back two days after that. Still no new fish. Apparently they get some but not all species every thursday.
Thanks for not telling me dude!
Anyway. I’ll wait a bit then look at getting 1 or two more females. After I call to confirm there’s more in of course… Or maybe I’ll go phone them now and ask when. Then call after that date to confirm. :x
Oh, since the 2 females are rather pregnant and on their own side of the divider I had two seperate the males. Two in the platy tank, two in the community.
They were being nasty little buggers! Chasing and fin-nipping.
