Hello there!
Is anyone else planning to set up an outdoor tub for their CPD? I think I’m going to try a pair and see how they do. Fingers crossed!
Lets see pics and specs of your outdoor tubs if you do this. I’ll post more as I get them set up and settled in.May 27, 2007 at 1:17 am #11239atlantis_childParticipantPersonally I don’t think it’s a good idea. Unless, of course you live somewhere a lot like Mynamar…
Temperature, lighting, organisms in the tank etc. can be much better controlled indoors. These are, after all, tropical fish, not goldfish or koi.
May 27, 2007 at 3:00 am #11241AquaseafoamParticipantHave you ever tried tubbing outdoors with tropical fish? this is the first year where I live in a place with room to do it- now have a yard and not in an apartment.
If you haven’t, give this article a look see http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/ponds/Sipes_Summer_Tubbin.html
The author had 100s of zebra danios breed for him, as well as many other fish. Granted, CPD aren’t zebras, but they are somewhat similar in breeding i think.
these are not permanant places for the fish- everyone will find a place inside or at someone else’s fishroom before the temperatures start to fall. Also the organisms are great live food for these fish, can you say mosquito larve?.. yum yum.
Predators are more of a concern in outdoor ponds, but should be able to control that with a net or cover over the tub if they are a problem in your area.
Edit:
I am also planning on throwing some praecox rainbows, swordtails, endler’s livebearers, bettas and cherry shrimp in various tubs this summer.May 27, 2007 at 3:29 am #11242atlantis_childParticipantWell I guess living up North where the temperature goes way down at night and there’s a possibility of snow falling ( even freak ones in the middle of summer ) every month of the year biases my opinion.
It sounds interesting though. I’d love to see pictures of yours if you get the chance.

They are believed to tolerate cooler temperatures and our summers are fairly good so i dont see why not. The combination of coloured water, moss, floating plants and copious live foods in a large water butt will do these fish the world of good. Many fish are a lot hardier than most people give them credit for, how many habitat’s in the wild are a constant 78f and given 2 feeds a day.
The water butt is slightly closer to a real enviroment than our tanks will ever be.
Just be sure to keep an eye on your temperature and please let me know how you do, I might just join you.June 9, 2007 at 9:20 pm #11372AquaseafoamParticipantHere are the tubs I’ve got going right now. My poor bf, comes home to a new one all the time.. haha.
CPD on left, betta on the right, 20 gallon tubs
30-40 gallon flower pots, Praecox rainbows and black swordtails:
Rainbow fry:
Kiddie pool- bluefin killifish, endler’s livebearers, some kinda of darter
June 9, 2007 at 10:44 pm #11373ste12000ParticipantNow i am impressed, you certainly dont hang about. Excellent idea and they look great. Keep us informed on how you get on.
June 11, 2007 at 4:05 pm #11374AquaseafoamParticipantHey thanks!
If money and space wasn’t an issue, I’d have even more! The kiddie pool is my favorite, just because I can still see the fish swimming around.June 11, 2007 at 6:59 pm #11375ste12000ParticipantI live in Cheshire, England. It is now our summer and temperatures have stayed at 80f all week. I have placed a 20 gallon tank outside, planted with java moss and floating water lettuce. Temp is 78 daytime and 70-73 at night.
I have placed some endlers guppys out there tonight as a experiment to see how they do. I will keep a close eye on water temp and pollution but i expect the endlers to multiply quickly once the water produces some aquatic organisms and plenty of algae.
Ill keep you posted.June 12, 2007 at 4:28 am #11378AquaseafoamParticipantI think they will be fine. We are having highs of 90 on some days (not this week thank goodness) and lows of upper 50s this week. I think the amount of water keeps the temp fairly stable.
good luck!June 12, 2007 at 5:41 pm #11380mummymonkeyParticipantLooks good. Just watch out for jumpers.
June 23, 2007 at 4:15 pm #11468AquaseafoamParticipantSo heres a little update on my tubs.
I have tons of praecox rainbow fry! I can’t count them all b/c there are so many and there are too many floating plants. I spotted my adult swordtails, but again- too much plant cover to see much else. As for the CPD, I can see the adults if i sneak up on them, but haven’t noticed any fry. I’ll have to take a closer look, and maybe do a sweep with a net to see if i have anything.
I got a new puppy two weeks ago and he is taking up all my time so i don’t have as much to devote to my fishies right now. I can’t just stare endlessly into the tubs anymore.. lol. I can’t see into the kiddie pool very well anymore b/c the plants are rapidly covering the top, again haven’t peeked in there yet.Anyone else set up some tubs yet? Ste how is yours?
June 24, 2007 at 8:18 pm #11479katkinParticipantI would love to try tubbing, but with soooooo much rain I’d be afraid all the fish would be washed away! How do you deal with too much rain?? (can you tell, I live in the uk?) Plus I’d have to have enough room in the house for them in the winter or I’d end up with fish lollies.
KJune 25, 2007 at 11:53 pm #11488ste12000ParticipantProject abandoned im afraid. We had one week of nice weather last month so i put the endlers outside, Since then we have had the wettest june since records began and temp is struggling to get above 50-60f…. I brought them back in before i was accused of fish genocide…… If only i lived in the states or Australia, i would have the garden full.
June 26, 2007 at 5:50 am #11489katkinParticipantIt’s such a shame isn’t it. I might give it a go in my new place, if we have a good summer. I might be able to keep them out for a month, but if the weather caries on the way it is at the moment, I’ve no chance! They’ve even had to close my boys school, as not only is the playground etc flooded, but the boiler broken down as well and flooded the inside!
