Hello everyone i am new to pearl danio’s so therefore i have some questions to ask you.

    1) This is how my fish look like http://www.aboutfishonline.com/articles/pearl-danio.html When i searched for pearl danios online they were colourful why is this not the case for my fish. Could it be because they are young. Also is there any way i can sex the fish i mean if they had colours it would be easier but they dont. It is mostly silvery so how can i sex them.

    2) I wanted to breed my fish i think i have 2 males and a one is bigger than the others so i think it is a female. My tank is 40 litres and has a lot of fake plants. It also has a filter and a thermostat. Can you tell me how i can breed them. i have a smaller tank about 7 litres which can be used however it doesnt have a filter or a thermostat will that be a problem? . i read that if you but a male and a female in a tank for a while 4-6 days they will spawn. can you please help me out and tell me the best way to breed them.

    3) can the pearl danios live in a pond? i mean can they survive without a thermostat or a filter?

    4) if they do spawn what should i do should i move the eggs as i heard they eat it.

i feed the fishes 2 times a day with dried brine shrimps which they seem to like a lot. my tank has marbles at the botton like stones but with colour.

please try to answer my questions. any help would be appreciated thank you.

Please help me as soon as possible this is urgent

Hi lijojohn08, welcome to the forum.

There are several reason your Pearls may not be too colorful. They could still be young as you mention, they also often try to blend in with the substrate. If you have light colored substrate they will be lighter in color. Their overall mood also plays a big part in their color.

As they become sexually mature, the females will become much fuller bodied than the males. The males will stay rather thin and very streamlined.

I spawn my Pearls Danio in a different fashion than my Celestial Pearl Danio. For the Pearls, I use a breeder box that will allow the eggs to fall through to the bottom of the tank…

I normally separate the sexes for several days prior to spawning and then place the breeders, (2 males per female), into the breeder box in the evening just before lights out. If properly conditioned they will most likely spawn at first light the next morning.

After the fish have spawned, I remove them from the breeder box and remove the box from the tank. In 2 to 3 days the eggs will begin to hatch. The fry will be free swimming in another 2 or 3 days. I normally feed them green water & infusoria for the first 7 to 10 days and then move them on to micro worms.

Best of luck with your breeding project!

    Hi lijojohn08,

In photo DSC02596 it looks like the fish on the left is a male and the other 2 are female. It’s really hard to tell from the photo, but that would be my best guess.

Once again, it’s really hard to tell from the photo, but they appear to be Pearl Danios (Danio albolineatus).

The fish look to be mature and with just a little conditioning should be ready to spawn. Feed them some hi quality or live foods for about a week.

Best of luck with your breeding project!

I don’t think those are Celestial Pearl Danios. That’s why the colors, shape, and size are different..

What’s left to answer? They appear to be mature Pearl Danio (Danio albolineatus). From the photo it looks like you have 1 male & 2 female. That’s as good as I can do from the pictures. With a little conditioning they should spawn for you. What else would you like to know?

Here’s a good write up on spawning Pearl Danios…

I almost jumped out of my seat when I saw this breeder box! I think the material is perfect for an idea I have (if not the box itself). So I take it that you can’t use it for CPDs? If so I’m sad because I’ve been thinking of trying to grow Dwarf Hair grass in a 30g tank and then putting what looks like a platform using similar material to what your breeder box uses. Setting it up like yours would make my life so much easier!
May I ask where you got your breeder box? The hole sizes look to be just perfect for this idea I had if I can’t just setup a tank like yours where it’s just fish in a floating mini breeder crate looking thing.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi OoglyBoogly, welcome to the forum!

I wouldn’t say you can’t use a box like this for CPD’s, because I have used it in the past. It’s just that CPD’s spawn differently than your “typical” Danio and using the box is not very productive with CPD’s.

If you are looking for something easy to use for CPD’s I would suggest my egg trap…

Here’s the link to the whole DIY project on my other site…
