Hi all,
I went to the LFS a few weeks ago & in a tank of neon tetra where 2 stowaways that looked alot like CPD’s only much paler in colour.
I bought them for £1 each & brought them home into their own 25l tank with lots of plants, a 15g air filter (carbon added), bogwood covered in java moss and a very fine gravel substrate. The water perams are pH 7.3, GH 16d, KH 10d, NO2 0, NO3 0-5, Temp 23.5c.
The problem is that there is only two of them & they’re still so timid and spend all of their time hiding to the point where I cant tell if they’re eating anymore.
They’re almost impossible to get hold of around here (Dorset, UK) and I can’t find anything else of a similar size to put with them as calming fish.
Does anyone have any ideas because I’ve spent the best part of a year trying to find them and I dont want stressed, dead fish? :idea:February 24, 2010 at 12:42 am #14290BallAquaticsParticipantHi ferreter, welcome to the forum!
Ok, here’s what I’d do. Take some moss, guppy grass or java grass and put a clump big enough to make a hiding place in one corner of the bottom of the tank. If they have some place where they can quickly take cover, they might be more likely to venture out into the tank.
Feed them food that will sink. I prefer to use golden pearls, but you can use crushed flakes too as they will sink after a little time. Shrimp pellets and pieces of algae wafer work good too. The idea is to get something down to the bottom of the tank where they feel more secure.
Now for the bad news… If the fish are wild caught, they may never loose their timidness. My tank raised fish are far more outgoing than any of my original breeders.
Best of luck & please keep us informed as to how things work out.

February 27, 2010 at 6:26 pm #14293ferreterParticipantThanks, I spent yesterday on the road to collect some more CPD’s.
They where in a mixed tank and almost transparent so I bought the lot ( 8 ) to hopefully give them a better life.
I checked this morning and they’ve all coloured up nicely enough to notice that at least three of the fish I bought yesterday aren’t CPD’s. I’m pretty sure they are Microrasbora erythromicron/Danio erythmomicron “Zebra Rasbora”.
They school together and seem to be very compatible so I’m not too worried but I think I’m going to clear out whats left of my 100l after an unfortunate few weeks for that tank (some weird tetra killing disease) and put them in once I’m sure that its cleared up.At the mo’ it has 8 mollies, 3 guppies, 4 bronze corydoras and 1 Krib after her mate sadly passed away. I’ve got a friend that deals with cichlids who would like the krib and I can find a home for the livebearers but I’d like to keep the corys if its possible……. dependant on the general consensus of the good members of your forum.

Then they are definitely Danio erythmomicron!
That’s great that you found some more CPD’s. Hopefully they won’t be quite so timid as they find strength in numbers.
The Danio erythmomicron are very cool fish in their own right. Mine just buzz around in the tank like little humming birds.

February 27, 2010 at 9:29 pm #14296Tom2006ParticipantI agree completely with Dennis. I can also add that my wild CPD’s were very timid in their original shoal of five but now they have bred up to a group of 15+ they actually swim to the front of the tank when I come to feed them!!
February 28, 2010 at 6:15 pm #14300ferreterParticipantThe original 2 have coloured up nicely and are still very nervous, the others are pretty nervous and the zebra’s may as well be non existant.
One of the CPD’s has been quarantined into a salt and blue solution this morning after I noticed an outbreak of fungus on his tail, poor thing looked rediculous in a bare tank on his own so I dropped a terracota pot for him to sneak away.
I hope I’m right in thinking that I should only treat the one fish and not the entire population?I posted on the summer tubbing thread since I’ve been doing my research & collected some drums to put them in in a couple of months. As usual the wifes gone nuts since the garden is now full of blue drums, can’t blame her, feet 1st…. AGAIN
