I have never bred fish before. I initially wanted to build a saltwater aquarium for aesthetic purposes; however the cost was quite intimidating. I knew to afford a good setup I would have to wait for awhile.
I am a rather impatient person so I decided to buy a small 16 gallon freshwater setup, and learn the hobby before venturing further. I have to say I am very pleased with my decision. I enjoy gazing at the tank, and trying to recreate ideal conditions.
The problem is I feel like there is not much room to grow. Besides my regular water changes, there is not much to tinker with, and I want to delve deeper into the hobby.
After some thought, I started to research breeding tropical fish. I picked up some books at the library and began surfing the web. My goal is to have a hobby, and make some supplemental income. I would like to breed some fish and eventually make an extra 500-1000$ a month.
My first thought was starting with an interesting fish. I wanted a fish that was rather rare, and not readily available. I also wanted a fish that would not require large tanks or great startup costs. That brings me to the Celestial Pearl Danio. It is small, unique, and hardly anyone around me carries the fish. It has a very unique appearance, and I honestly could see myself wanting some in my community tank.
Recently I found a distributor that would sell me these fish at about $2.50 a pop, but they are very small. I called most of the independent fish store around me and they said they would definitely be interested in the fish, as long as they had some meat on them. So everything looks promising. Still I need some guidance.1. How many tanks should I start with? (I was thinking about 8/10 gallon tanks, and 3/20 gallon tanks. I figured I could put breeding pairs in the 10’s, and raise in a few, and let them grow in the 20’s)
2. Do you know of any book that may help me?
3. I know keeping the bloodline strong is important, but how do I achieve this? Is there a rule of thumb?
4. Is it wise to start with one type of fish, and then grow your business?
5. How many fish should I put in a breeding tank? What ratio works best?
6. What is the gestational period of the fish, and how long does it take for fry to mature?
7. What kind of lighting will work best?
8. I have read about the marble method, and the java moss, and breeding mops. I was think about marbles and moss, am I headed in the right direction.
Anything anyone could add would really help. I am not trying to make boatloads just a few extra bucks. I know it will take awhile. I would really like to contribute to saving this little fish, and promoting tank bred purchases. I have a baby on the way and the extra cash would really be helpful. I just want to make sure I am headed in the right direction. Thank you allFebruary 6, 2009 at 1:59 am #13895BallAquaticsParticipantHi moobooshtz!
