Hi
Just setting up my first tanks for breeding these little beauties.
I have a small main tank for them, also have a tank put aside for fry when I get some, what should I put in it, gravel, sand, heater, small filter, plants, wood?????????????
No idea what I should have in there as I’m a first time bredder.
Thanks in advance

Check put the “Habitat” thread for info on what their native habitat looks like. In short: sand, thick and low plants, some high plants
June 19, 2007 at 5:05 pm #11414jojomojo1971Participantsorry I was meeaning the tank to grow the fry in what do I need.
My main tank is set up and ready to go. have read the habitat thread, just need some more java moss.
Thanks

i would say minimal equipmentheater, air filter/filter, no gravel maybe a few easy growing/low demanding plants maybe even fake so the fry can hide in
if its on show you might want some gravel to make it look nice but idealy as less as possable to help maintan it.

Use a air powered sponge filter so you do not suck up the eggs/fry, heater and plenty of java moss. Mine seem really nervous in the bare tank, and hav’nt spawned yet…. My Ram cichlids have spawned tonight though so im well chuffed….
June 19, 2007 at 9:55 pm #11418jojomojo1971ParticipantShould I not let them spawn in their main tank then move the fry to a different tank/ or should I move 1 pair and see if the spawn in the fry tank.
Confused

June 19, 2007 at 10:20 pm #11419chr15_8Participanti breed mine in a planted tank then move the fry into the fry tank. i think this is the way most people do it on here due to space etc it is also the easyiest way
so you could have a community of galaxy/Celestial Pearl Danio’s in a tank with a few plants heater filter and you should get some fry
this will probably sound comfusing if you dont understand the above i wouldnt bother reading below as it will make it harder!
theres a thread on here that says if you condition a male and female in a seperate tank for a week/few weeks (carnt remember exactly) so a male in his own tank and a female in her own tank)
after the 2 weeks are up put the male with the female and leave for a day(24 hours) and there should be eggs in there (however you probably wont see them unless you eye sight is perfect)
remove both parents into another tank and leave the eggs for a few days and there will be fry (aparently they can have upto 250 but i carnt say wheather its true or not as i havent done it yet)
when i get my fish house done i will be trying this
ste congrats on the rams does this mean your getting more tanks to shut the mrs up ? lol

June 20, 2007 at 6:19 pm #11425jojomojo1971ParticipantThanks for that, ordered a heater and sponge filter. and making a java fern carpet for them
My Galaxy’s arrived today, for there main tank, 25ltr, planted tank, so hopefully they will be happy in there.
Very timid at the moment, anything I can do to make them a bit happier????????????
Cheers
JOJune 20, 2007 at 7:50 pm #11426chr15_8Participantmine were very timid for the first week but i a well planted tank the adapt fast
like most new fish they will be shy however considering they are (more than likely) wild the wouldnt of been in contact with humans before except at the shop’s etc
there colours will also get alot more intense then you will be able to tell your male’s and females apart
good luck

June 21, 2007 at 10:35 pm #11438ste12000ParticipantLol chris..i cant get more tanks until my fishroom is up and running. Iv got 8 now in the house and still not enough room for all the fish i want.
I removed the ram parents as i heard they can be egg eaters, then the eggs fungused and i thougt i had lost the lot, tonight i was just about to drain and clean the tank to set it up again and found upto 20 very newly hatched fry
Well chuffed to salvage some fry from this spawning as the parents are wild fish and truly the most gorgeous rams iv seen in 20 years of keeping fish.
Iv still had no luck with the CPD,s… I will try again when iv got a spare tank. I plan to fit a grid and cram as much java moss in there as the tank will hold, with the grid fitted i can leave the parents for a couple of days and hopefully they should settle.June 21, 2007 at 10:39 pm #11439ste12000ParticipantHi jojo, mine were also very shy in a small tank like yours even with tons of cover. I found that when they went into my large community tank with other fish they settled really well and never hide. My tip would be to maybe add a few Endlers guppys to your tank as they are not shy and are not egg or fry eaters, they should give the CPD’s confidence to come out of hiding. Goodluck.
June 21, 2007 at 11:18 pm #11445atlantis_childParticipantAdding to what ste12000 said about the guppies, my galaxies were also much less shy when they were in with my white clouds. They all swam happily together.
I imagine that in larger number galaxies may feel more comfortable too.
June 22, 2007 at 6:20 am #11447jojomojo1971ParticipantRight so Endlers would be a good idea?, i have 10 Galaxys in my tank, is that enough???
Oh and I don’t want to put them in my community I have yoyo loaches, mollys, shrimp, columbian & xray tetra’s, harlequins and BN plec with some corys and rams going in later, so I don’t want them in this tank.
Tanks is only 25ltr but is over filtered, how many endlers??
Cheers
JOJune 22, 2007 at 4:46 pm #11457ste12000ParticipantRight jo, your CPD’s will be fine if you put them in the community but you would not get any fry, to get them you would have to spawn them in a seperate tank. You will certainly see more of your cpd if they are in with other fish. Mine only came out of hiding when added to a tank containing very similar fish to yours.
June 27, 2007 at 6:35 am #11501jojomojo1971ParticipantWell the thing is I’m wating to breed and to be honest the stress for me and them tranfering tanks I’d rather leave them in their own tank.
They have been in a week now, still very nervous. I haven’t seen them eat much, any way to tell if the not eating, from what I can see their bellys don’t look sunken, so I guess they must be eating when I leave the room.
Should I get a couple of guppys??????
Just got some more java moss too for their tank and the fry tank, if they ever mate.
Any suggestions?????????????
Thanks
